This thread focuses on Pep Comics and other high octagon golden age MLJ books, from storm trooper crushing heroes to Archie's high school antics. If ya got 'em, post 'em here! Guess I'm member #1, but I'll bet there are plenty of members lurking out there! Cheers, Catman |

Am I member #2? I love this cover for being a key transition from MLJ's initial superheroes to their future Archie reality. And the Shield looks happy about it! |

@RareComics Indeed you are officially number 2, and #46 will have your proxy! I've always suspected that The Shield was related in some fashion to Archie, but kept his identity secret so no one would learn the truth. (lol) I'm not sure where 3-6 are lurking, but I located #7... |

Obviously the Shield has issues with this brand of action... |

Pep #9 - One of my favorite solo Shield covers (great perspective)... No villains, just heroism and strength, but very dynamic. |

This is the last MLJ title I'll add for now, but it's a doozy... I'm sure that someone will bring more game, MLJ needs the love. This Shield-Wizard is special for a number of reasons, the costume change and super power reduction being obvious ones. But even more interesting is the fact that this appears to be a Kirby cover or at least Kirby pencils inked by Irv Novick. If so, this is probably the only Kirby work for MLJ, but there are interesting reasons for this, based on the competition between Timely and MLJ. For one thing, the Captain America concept was close enough to MLJ's Shield character that a lawsuit was only averted by changing Cap's shield design (changed to round with issue #2). The story of Cap's connection with The Shield goes something like this... When Goodman asked if Joe Simon had any ideas for a patriotic hero he showed him the work Jack Kirby had done on Captain America #1. It was exactly what Martin Goodman was looking for. Through negotiations for the character Simon was offered editorship of the magazine and was supposed to receive shared profits from S&K's creation with Goodman. But Goodman used a form of basket accounting to cover up Cap's success (combining losses from unprofitable titles with the big profits accrued by Cap). This served two purposes, it kept imitators in the dark as to the phenomenal profits Captain America generated, and it kept Joe Simon from receiving earnings he and Jack Kirby had been promised. As a result of this clever bookkeeping ruse both artists decided to continue moonlighting work to other publishers. When Goodman learned of this there was a confrontation whereby S&K departed Timely on less than friendly terms (with CA #10), leaving their first great creative collaboration to other artists. By Spring '42 they were working full time for DC, eventually establishing their own art shop in the late 40's. But in the interim between Timely and DC they worked on projects for other publishers and apparently provided an assist to MLJ redesigning The Shield character to be more like Captain America (perhaps this was a parting shot at Timely's publisher, Martin Goodman). Of course, some of this is speculation gleaned from reading Joe Simon's autobiography, which I highly recommend. Cheers, CatMan |

@vaultkeeper No problem. It's a nice new place to visit too. I know they'll be tweaking a few things here and there as time progress',but I can see its going to be a contender. | ||
