CBCS vs PSA Lawsuit21143

With the grading wars amping up as a legitimate 2rd player enters the field, probably a good idea to get ahead of the ball and for an instagram reel or You Tube interview revealing who that is (or they are) and their experince

Is 2rd (above) pronounced "turd"?

Where would you go to procure a head grader? This isn’t a main stream business where there are graduate’s waiting in line to be hired. I remember when CBCS was looking to hire graders. The vast majority of applicants didn’t even come close to expectations. Hopefully cross training was going on behind closed doors.

Probably the same place the cgc will go when it's time to replace Matt.

Do you think West was grading and finalizing every book that was graded?

Who took West's place when he was let go from the cgc?

Maybe they will send an S.O.S. to Vancouver and hire greggy away from the Canadian government.

If that's Maurice they're in good hands.

Also, I'm not paying more for subgrades. I can use my own eyes for centering and avoid the dreaded arvel comics.

If CBCS wins the lawsuit, what are they going to get? Sole rights to a terrible idea?

First, the filing seems pretty damning. Beckett seems to have some good evidence of wrongdoing, and there hasn't been discovery yet. It will be interesting to see what shakes out of this, and if PSA ends up having been involved.

Things are getting interesting in the industry.

(And never heard of these "sub-grades". It sounds like grader notes)

Its existed on card grading for a while, it would be interesting to see it on comics.

The 4 sub grade categories on the cards are centering, corners, edges and surface.

It would allow even more premium prices on a 9.8 with all 9.8+ subgrades, or a 9.8 with a 9.9 centering, etc.

Not a graded card collector, but this makes very little sense to me. Four "10" subgrades is a "10". Okay, that tracks. But three "10" and any one "9.5" is also a "10"? My BA is in English, but even I can do simple averages. 39.5/4 = 9.875, and so on.

Subgrades seem interesting conceptually as an expansion to grader's notes, but if there is no mathematical sense to relate the subgrade to the overall grade, it's just another way to separate fools from money.

I would expect that certain categories would have more "weight" than others. Cover condition is likely to be "more important" than interior condition, for example. But it opens up a lot more room for people to complain.

Hopefully it is easier done than said. CGC had three graders who worked together for years with others under them. Hopefully CBCS had that in place in case of an emergency or someone deciding to suddenly leave.

I'm not so sure the complaints are warranted because as far as I know, the sub-grading is optional...One doesn't have to pay for it.

I'm not a fan of sub-grades myself...I won't pay for the service. I would buy CBCS books that had the sub-grades....I won't pay a premium for the book that has it... but I think this service might be good for CBCS if it differentiates them from CGC....any edge CBCS can get on its competitors...especially CGC is good with me.

They're staying in the loop for that day when CGC shoots a comic book in the middle of the street. Then they'll say that they don't think CBCS' graders are experienced enough and keep submitting to CGC.

I started watching the Comic Book Investment video and thought....why is this guy coming off so defensive right off the bat!?

Had no idea he's the son of someone involved.

I don't watch either of these guys regularly as they both irritate me...but I will say that when CBI starts talking about this history of his Dad in grading, it does shed a lot of light onto why he has such a hate (or maybe a chip in his shoulder) on for CBCS in some of the videos that I have watched in the past...

Yeah..at first I watched some of his vids years ago but I had to stop as I started to realize most of his 'analysis' even the whole premise was specious - that is to say things sounded good and maybe true but were actually wrong...trend analysis was interesting but trying to conflate comics and stocks just doesn't equate

Have to laugh...he's another of the group that complains pretty regularly about CGC but...hey..what ya gonna do????

@KatKomics @Paulbg2000 I didn't watch the entirety of either video, but a quick Google search shows that Paul Lesko was the chair of an IP division for a law firm at one point. You don't get to chair an IP division if you don't know IP law -- so that's a very quick strike against the CBI video when he tries to say that Lesko doesn't know what he's talking about and could just be a divorce attorney.

All the YouTube stuff is just another example why every new client of mine gets a 3 page letter why they should not use any social media while they have an active case.

One last thing -- I'm not an IP lawyer, but I also know that speculating about the merits of the case at the beginning is only good for someone who needs ratings or "clicks."

I’ll add, the YT guy committed the same “sin” as that lawyer… not taking 30 seconds to diligence the basics. That lawyer may be sufficiently capable in his domain (no opinion from me) but he clearly didn’t prep for that video.

The YT guy also didn’t take the 30 seconds needed to see the lawyer did indeed have a relevant background.

Common mistake - sloppiness. Both videos were for self-aggrandizement but both were marketing at least some level of incompetence.
