Question regarding switching entire collection from CGC to CBCS20778

I don't have any CBCS slabs myself, but... Rydog private msg quote post Address this user
I've never had a comic graded, but have been collecting for about 6 years and have bought many graded comics. I've accumulated about 35-40 CGC graded comics. With the recent tampering issues with CGC combined with the new CBCS labels, I'm heavily debating switching my entire collection over to CBCS. I have many CGC 9.8 comics. The thing is I don't want to have to crack them all open to send to CBCS. If I leave them in their CGC cases, they will be protected on-route to CBCS, which is a good thing, but will CBCS then do the cracking themselves or will they reject them because they are in CGC cases? Thanks for any input.

They will crack and grade - but no guarantee you'll get the same grades.

I know the grades are not guaranteed, they could go up or down, but just wanted to know if they would accept them as is.

Welcome to the forum, @Rydog.

CBCS would crack them and grade them. You could end up with some that grade lower than their original CGC grades, though, so keep that in mind.

Of course you could also end up with equal grades or even HIGHER grades. You never know.

I wouldn't waste the money. Both companies are good and both will continue to strive for excellence. They can't be 100% all of the time. If you like one over the other, then go with them from this point forward.

Absolutely!

That is the main issue. If I choose CBCS going forward then my current collection wouldn't match the new ones.

One of the issues I was looking at on one of the CBCS stickied posts, is that there is a picture that shows a lot of highly damaged cases on the side of the case and the post says that is all a normal part of the manufacturing process. Some of my CGC cases have a very mild mark are two on the case I'm assuming from the assembly process, but nothing like that picture shows. Is that still the case (no pun intended) to have those marks on the new CBCS cases? Or have they worked out that issue?

I did these several years ago, sent in all my cgc books to CBCS. I think there were around 35 books or so. A few of them dropped from 9.8 to 9.6. It was worth it to me. I got to a point in my collecting that every time I saw cgc in my collection I would cringe. I would send more books to be slabbed by CBCS but I just can’t stand the new label, so the rest of my collection sits raw. In the end it’s whatever will make you the most happy and enjoy your collection.

That's exactly what I'm considering. I'm sorry you don't like the new labels. That is one of the reasons why I'm thinking of doing this in the first place. Another reason is the more solid case design of CBCS vs CGC.

Glad I am not OCD. My brain would melt, looking at the visual cacophony of my slabbed books.

@James42 It's not so much an OCD issue, but my current thinking is that the CBCS cases and labels are actually better than CGC at least from my basic research.

@Rydog The current CBCS cases are great!! As for the labels, I wasn't sure about them at first. The narrow font... I just wasn't sure how I felt about it. It grew on me, though. Now, I think the labels look really sharp.

Yes, the new cases do not have that "damage" on the sides anymore.

The new cases and labels are great. If you want the uniformity in your collection, go for it.

@Rydog welcome to the forum!

There's no annoying manufacturing scratches on the sides, but since the new slabs were released a few years ago every single damn one of them have this annoying scratch along the bottom. It's not that noticeable unless it's a darker cover, but noticeable enough to me to not want to waste my money reslabbing books.

I got the images from https://www.mycomicshop.com/. There's plenty of more eyesores to look at.

@flanders That scratch is on all new CBCS cases?

Can anyone else confirm?

Also, thanks for the welcome!

Yes, that line was still there in my latest batch that I got back a couple of months ago. Hopefully CBCS can resolve that issue sometime in the not too distant future.

@Wade_Story ?

Yes, since they updated the cases about 4 years ago. I figured they would resolve the issue by now. It's still difficult to see unless you have high resolution scans or put your face right up to them (they seem to show up more clearly on scans). If you haven't seen one in person, try that out. I pulled out a few of my slabs on display and it's actually very difficult to notice, even on a black book, unless you look and shine a light from a certain angle.

They never will all match. Both companies change case/label every few years. It's designed to drive us OCD collectors mad and keep us coming back, reholder after reholder, after reholder...

@flanders Must be something on the actual mold that is causing the scratch. Should be easy for them to track down the cause.

If you don't mind getting lower grades on those 9.8's then by all means go ahead.

Those scratches are extremely, extremely faint....many slabs I have, I can't even notice they're there.

But are they the exact same scratch on all cases or is it just randomized scratches in that general area on all cases?

They are better. The difference in visual clarity alone is astounding when viewed side-by-side.

But unless I was dealing with a really high-end book for my PC or a book with obvious room for improvement via pressing, I wouldn't want to risk the damage from travel, cracking, and handling.

A common saying is, "Buy the book, not the slab." A corollary might be, "Collect the book, not the slab." I buy books I like, irrespective of which of the big two companies have graded them. I don't spend time looking at the slabs.
