Is Frank Miller Signature/Remaque/Head Sketch/Full Figure Sketch worth it?20636

https://forum.cbcscomics.com/topic/2473/page/1/frank-miller-signature-worth-it/

Just wanted to renew this discussion as I am thinking of investing in getting FM to sign/sketch/remaque some of my beloved comics of FM - but look at his prices:

signature $140
remaque $ 320
Head sketch $1085
Full body sketch $2085

I know ... I am a huge fan of FM .... but I still reeled back in surprise (and a little horror) when I saw these prices. What are people's views? should we just buy off eBay since the market is in a down cycle?

Also what really is the difference between "Remaque" and "Head Sketch"? is the latter worth three times as much?

Views welcomed!

It's like the Roach Motel for comic collectors. chester15 private msg quote post Address this user
People must be paying these amounts, or the solicitation would go begging.

Or maybe he's testing the market.

Or gets enough signature requests that he can charge outrageously for anything more difficult. It's all gravy.

I'd pass. It seems like a complete waste of money. You'd be better off trying to buy a slabbed comic he's signed for less money than what he charges.

Thanks - Sadly, I tend to agree with the general view that it is truly over the top in terms of pricing. But if I still wanted to do one to feel that I have a personal copy - what would people do?

Just the signature?

Between the Remaque and Head Sketch - which would you choose?

I'd choose neither. I'm not a fan of remarques or head sketches on comic covers. I think it ruins the cover art. I also don't think you'd ever get back what you invested if you ever tried to sell.

If you are going to spend the money, I would get either a signature or a full body sketch.

I don't care for remarques. They are basically comic book graffiti.

Also, if you're willing to spend $1085 on a head sketch, then I would just go all out on a full body sketch.

However, like I said, I wouldn't pay those prices for any of it.

Sigh....I haven't looked at any of his sketches lately....I know in the past they were getting pretty sad..to the point that to look "good" you really needed to also have them inked/coloured by another artist...which kind of defeats the purpose.

Plenty of signatures out there though on existing books...unless there is a specific book you want to go the signature route.

I have at least 2...maybe 3 things signed.
I think the best thing was the original Limited Edition Dark Knight Returns Hardcover..but even that was like an edition of 4000

*not my copy...mine's in a box somewhere??

Some of these sigs are so expensive. I really wanted a neil gaiman he is my favorite writer. I can't remember exactly but they were in this range. It's so much.

I remember back when The first 3 issues of the Dark Knight Returns mini series were out and I was at a show in Dallas that Frank Miller was setup at. I tried to catch him all day for signatures, and finally came across him outside a bathroom. HA HA. Yeah, I was that guy. He got a kick out of it and signed the 3 issues for me. No cost back then. Those were the days.

Gaiman...really??

Again...so many sigs already out there - hard covers, comics etc.

His table at NYCC was mobbed. He did not look healthy at all. His bouncers don’t let anyone get close unless you’re in line. no pictures. Very strict.

@paulwhng - Personally for those prices, I would buy something already signed and slabbed on eBay. If you really want to meet him, I would just go for a signature on one book. As @KatKomics said, his sketches are not what they used to be, and in my opinion, definitely not worth the asking price. Heck his signature isn’t even what it used to be. He used to sign his name (see below), now you only get an F and an M.

@paulwhng my opinion, look on MCS and eBay for already made and graded books. The worse part getting a commission from someone is when it comes back less than a 9.8. Buying one already done and graded means you know what you’re getting. JMO

Here’s a good sketch by miller and it’s signed by Stan lee too for. $1600…. And it’s a 9.8

To spell out the difference - a remarque is a small sketch on the cover, usually just a head or maybe a bust. A head sketch would take up most of the cover but just be the character's head.

To add my opinion on the question - Miller's art has gotten really bad. I would contemplate a signature if I were a big fan but that's about it. It's true that you can find lots of examples for sale already but part of the price is meeting the person so if that's a big deal to you, you might want to pony up.

Well... I just watched a CBCS 8.0 issue of Daredevil 200-something with a verified FM signature sell on Comiclink for $35 so I would NOT pay those prices.

The last signature I got in person was Steranko for $20 in 2017, and all the ones before that in the 80's and 90's were freely and happily given.

If that price included a DeLorean that took me back to 1986 and I could have that version of Frank Miller do a full sketch, then yes. Otherwise, no.

That being said, I'm a huge Frank Miller fan, and I'd probably pay the $140 for a signature if I was looking to get his signature. Simple truth is that the guy isn't going to live forever, and he's an industry legend. He's probaby the only living creator that can demand that price.

Not going to tell anyone how to spend money they earned. A few years back bought a DK III signed by Miller and the rest of the gang. Seller provided a picture of the book being signed and a PDF of the event it was signed at. Total just for the signatures was over 700. Beckett authenticated the signatures. Long story short the pricing you quoted might be a little high in the current market but in my opinion isn’t anywhere close to gouging. If you do decide to get the signature keep in mind Miller signs thousands if not tens of thousands of items every year. It will be cool to have but don't expect the item or Miller's signature to be scarce let alone rare.

McFarlane is basically in the same price range--on average a little higher-- for autographs. Guess some one needs to pay for McGuire's ball. Not sure about sketches and remarks.

@cesidio yeah, McFarlane came to mind. I've never paid for his signature, but it doesn't surprise me if it's in that range. I met him once at a local con a few years ago. I had to stand in line for 4 hours, but you got 2 signatures and he was super nice.
