| …to sell or trade a lot of collectibles for cash or maybe trade for one or two bigger comics or collectibles. I have 6 boxes of graded comics (modern and mostly not worth much with a few worth four digits), 4 long boxes of raw comics (many not read—I collect and read digital), three short boxes of raw comics, a few handful of beanie babies (original bears), and a bunch of Pokémon cards (only a handful graded by PSA or CGC, but a number of more recent cards in cases/good shape). Do you know of any key companies to consider to do this? I am not sure MyComicShop would take a bunch of comics not worth much, but thought they me a company to consider. Any thoughts/wisdom? eBay just does not makes sense for this collection minus a few of the most valuable collectibles, so looking for a quicker or more convenient method. Thank you for any wisdom. |

| If it's like most collections, 80%-90% of the value is probably in the top 20% of the items. I would separate those out for selling now. The other 80% I would pack away rather than liquidate. The landscape is changing so quickly these days. In my experience, a few of those items that have no value today will have value in the future and you will be glad that you didn't liquidate them in bulk for meaningless amounts of money. | ||

| I would bite the bullet and give them away for charity events. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a collector but the wife went crazy and bought me two long boxes for $50 a box, thinking she struck gold. I kept the things that I wanted and kept the temptation to start new collections at bay because it’s just not feasible to start mega new runs. I want to so bad but need to realize that I’m not a comic book shop and the “In years they’ll be worth a fortun”. The majority of my books, minus keys are below Face value. But I still love them. Do your a favor and donate them. It’s the cycle of life. I have read on these forums about the one that got away. Know what you have, and set the rest free. Not all that glitters is gold. | ||

| And an FYI, the wife did good. I set out 65 out of 435 comics that I think would return her investment, if they were all at least a 9.6 They are not but she’s happy thinking that they are. And helps me out with my hobby that she doesn’t understand. I’m Marvel, I nearly never interested in D.C. but she saw a box of comics and long story short, I love my wife and there’s a saying about gift horses and mouths.   |

| I'm doing the same thing right now. The approach I'm taking, since I'm not in a rush, is to organize things in order of how attached I am to them and then find a place to sell them. All the comics I listed here first, and then the ungraded books that didn't sell went to my friend with a comic store. All the graded books are going in waves to mycomicshop. If things happen to sell for more than I think they will, I'll still have the stuff that I like more at the end. When the money is all in I'll have the flexibility to buy wherever I can find a good price on a copy I want. If you want to do it all in one go, I don't think a big company will do a 'trade' like that. They would buy your comics roughly in bulk and then you'd have that value to buy something from the store. A local store would be more likely, I would guess. You could do multiple transactions with MCS, selling them what they'll buy and consigning the good stuff, but in the end you'd still have money value and buy something from the store. But I could be wrong, you could always email MCS and see what they would do. |

| Quick and convenient always means less money. Slow and time consuming means more money. You have to choose. If achieving maximum value, you are going to have to sell on eBay, Facebook or find local comic book shows (books in the dollar boxes often sell well) to attend. On eBay you just put 10-20 books in a listing so it is worth listing and selling. It's very unlikely any comic book store is going to be interested in trading a key, expensive book for a thousand books they will be selling for a dollar or two. But if you have comic book store(s) near you then it doesn't hurt to ask what value they would give in trade. If they have been in business any length of time their first question will be "what book(s) are you interested in?" |
