@power_struggle55 @WndrWmn74 lol I wish he was giving them to me. My dad does like comics but these I fee he kinda just bought to dabble in comics investing. He’s not planning on selling at the moment but since some of these are so rough as it is I’m gonna try to get them slabbed so they are graded for easier liquidation years down the road.

you'd be doing him a favor to get them slabbed. while trying to explain grading/slabbing to none comic collectors. I say....it keeps it in that condition. if its super rough shape like that f4 #52....you need to reserve it to prevent it from getting worst. tell him to let you do it for him as a gift. if he's a collector he knows how important some of those issues. it should be a crime to keep them in a bin to get in badder condition

These are the comics I’m sending in for my dad. I added press screen for most of them just in case but I doubt many will pass |

glad you are getting the #52 graded. it might be rough. probably a 2.0 or 2.5 but it needs to be preserved and graded

My dad’s been asking me to recommend him some comics to buy and the first ones had started to come in. Batman 181 isn’t the highest grade but the pin up, though detached, is included The seller included a few random bonus comics |

A few more books came in. Most of these were in pretty good condition except 15, which had some torn corners on the interior pages and 16 where the cover is split and detached |

I think I finally talked my dad down from his shopping spree, if only to save towards some larger keys later on but he does have some outstanding bids and some more books en route |

I don’t know why my dad’s so determined to buy up Nova comics. I know he’s coming to the MCU but I had to stop my dad from dropping a few hundred on a lot of the first 25 issues of the first series. He did pick up a 9.0 issue 1 UK price variant so that’ll be showing up soon I mentioned he should buy up the Kraven’s Last Hunt storyline which turned into buying a bunch of Web of Spider-Man He picked up a Killing Joke 6th print and when I told him to aim for the first print he picked up this And since he can’t keep mooching off my bags and boards he picked up these |

He does have copies of the first six issues including two copies of 1 & 2. I just don’t think there’s enough info yet to really make more concrete judgements. I don’t believe we even know which version of the character they’ll be using. So instead of spending hundreds on a run of non-keys maybe focus more on the ones that might be worth something regardless. Definitely issue 1 but also the first appearance of the newer version of the character

A few more came in and with some free bonus comics The bonus comics The package for the FF 49 got messed up in the mail The book made it through with a slight bend as can be seen in the first photo but otherwise okay. I’m not sure if this needs a full return and refund but maybe a partial refund that can cover a press and convenience might be in order |

A few more books came in. The FF 50 looks great but it does have some tape on the interior supporting the cover. I don’t think it’s detached or replaced but it presents well |

Is your father doing this primarily for personal enjoyment, or more for hopes of financial gain?

A little of both but I think a big part of it is that it gives something to kind of do together, which we really haven’t had for nearly three decades. Granted I’d be fine steering him towards $50-$100 books but he keeps coming back with books or lots going for several hundred so I try to steer him towards better uses for that budget |

One thing I really enjoyed is hunting for books with potential that are sitting just barely below the radar. Books that might be valuable enough to slab in an 8.0-9.0 but not yet in a 4.0-6.0. Most of them get there eventually. |

A few more books. My dad bought the Web of Spider-Man #1 on his own. Not sure if he thought it was the first issue of the original series but he didn’t pay too much. This here is probably the peak of my dad going rogue and his fixation on Nova. I know Nova 1 is heating up a little but I still don’t think it’s quite at the point to match what he paid for this one |

Interesting to see a collection being built. There are so many ways to do it. And so many books to buy for various reasons. Hope he is digging the process.

He seems to have a healthy budget. Would he have been better off being a bit more selective with higher end keys?

It’s been a bit of a strange process. He initially had asked for books that could see growth in the next few years. Not wanting to be presumptuous with someone else’s money I had suggested the lesser known Silver Age X-Men keys, Black Panther 2nd app (he already had the first), and first Poison Ivy and first Bullseye. All fairly safe bets without breaking the bank. Not sure how we got onto Silver Surfer/Galactus, maybe while spitballing as to where the MCU could be going but he’s the one that suggested an FF 50. A little overpriced but more than I had expected him to want to sink into this, so I recommended a few more reasonably priced options for FF 48-50. That was a significant outlay of money and he mentioned that he was feeling the pinch so I suggested something cheaper that could grow. Kraven might be appearing in the films soon so I suggested a solid set of Kraven’s Last Hunt. I think he’s the one that mentioned Nova coming to the MCU and I kinda had to rein him in from just buying stacks of Nova comics. I think he has like 3 copies of #1 including one graded 0.5 that he paid way too much for lol Again, trying to keep things a little more modest, I suggested the Ultimate Fallout 2nd prints. Miles Morales is a modern mainstay and the first print as expensive as it is, I figured the 2nd print would be more cost-effective. The other day he comes back asking what I thought of a first print raw that he’d found. I did some searching and gave him some options if he really wanted to buy a first print, including graded copies above and below the price of the raw he’d shown me as well as an OBO listing for another raw copy that I thought was in similar or better condition and my suggestion of what he should offer. He ended up winning the raw copy with my offer suggestion. So yeah, it’s been strange. He keeps complaining that it’s getting expensive so I suggest less expensive books and then he comes back with something far more expensive than I’d considered and me giving better valued options for what he’d suggested. I’ve also mentioned it a few times above that I also don’t think it’s wholly an investment game for him but an activity that we can do together, which we really haven’t had since doing martial arts when I was a kid. |

I know first hand what its like to get caught up in hype. Buying comics are kinda like drugs. While its great to have bonding with family, I'm slightly concerned that he expressed being slightly pinched in the wallet but spending more. If possible, I would try and set him up on a reasonable budget in terms of what can be spent. I know that as my father has gotten older he has become more child like and less adult in restraint and responsibility. Then again my dad is seeing people that aren't there so my case may be atypical. I would hate seeing your father get financially distressed over comics in his old age.... Edit Forgive the intrusion if my comments are too personal. |

I’m not too concerned. Knowing my dad he wouldn’t be spending what he can’t afford and the buying has slowed significantly since we’ve started. I think summing it all up as I did above makes it sound worse than it is.

I only started collecting about 12 years ago. Looking back, even my so called mistakes are worth more than I paid. My only regrets are the few trimmed and color touched books I just flat out missed or wasn’t careful enough about. I too put all my spare nickels into it as soon as I could, glad I did. And I too have a kid who has given me advice over the years, and a daughter who collects to boot, definitely a bonding hobby. Fun to see what your dad picks up. You guys do a con yet? |

Last book for the time being. Book looks great! It does need press to iron out a small bend at the top but afterwards I think it has potential to grade very highly! |
