It's obvious this site isn't where you go to get facts but where you go to hear an opinion you already believe. They do love predicting things to be bombs, i guess if you keep predicting it eventually you'll be right.

Does anyone want to guess an over/under on how many articles they had about Zendaya playing Mary Jane? If memory serves, the recent Spidey movies have been a bunch of bombs that everyone hated.

Marlon Perkins was a Sunday night staple in our house.

Wild Kingdom and Grizzly Adams were childhood staples. And if you were feeling a bit naughty you would flip through the National Geographic to find the photos of topless tribes.

"Eternals is another woke movie to come out of Hollywood that changes the characters to promote a woke politically correct agenda"

IRONY: When you complain about bias while clearly showing your bias.

I'm not a fan of change for the sake of change (Looking at YOU, Dan Didio), but like the people say "you gotta start SOMEWHERE".

What's funny is that main characters like Batman and Superman, etc. are tweaked and changed ALL... THE... TIME... If you compare their characteristics to when they first started, they are virtually unrecognizable, but yet there are no complaints from the anti-woke klan.

And the whole "create new characters instead of messing with the old ones" NEVER works as intended for two reasons:
1. With literally thousands of comic characters since the inception of super-heroes in the 1930's, it's hard to have an original character break-out in popularity. And...

2. Even IF a new character is created with "woke" characteristics, people STILL complain about "the Liberal agenda being shoved down our throats" (re: Jonathan Kent, an original character being designed with "woke" characteristics).

Yeah, Hollywood, and the entertainment industry in general, DOES lean towards Liberal and Progressive ideas. This is NOT NEW. Artists create the way they do because they enjoy challenging status quo. Remember the controversy surrounding the original Star Trek when Capt. Kirk (white man) kissed Lt. Uhura (Black female)? Today, we think nothing of it EXCEPT for the people who have an irrational problem with it.

I admit I'm an old curmudgeon who finds change difficult to accept, and I admit to being a romantic at heart. Guilty on both accounts. As a cranky old romantic I admit as well that one of my favorite once a year movies to watch is The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Jude Law, and my favorite - Eli Wallach. For those not familiar with the movie Eli Wallach plays an old movie writer who supposedly changed the line in Casablance from "Here's looking at you" to "Here's looking at you, kid." He is now old and infirm, but ends up being befriended by Kate Winslet who convinces him to go to a night honoring Arthur Abbott (the characters name in the movie).

I know I know get to the point . . .

So, when Arthur arrives at the gala celebrating his career he gets onstage and gives a speech in which he says: (and I'm paraphrasing here)

"I remember when one movie a month would be released, but today I open the paper and movies come out almost daily with box office results reported like baseball scores."

Obviously, the movie's writer believed that Hollywood had become more prolific in it's productions whilst giving up quality, and that is my opinion as well. Hollywood produces way to much formula based junk thinking actors in tights or special effects chases ad nauseum are enough. They do so because for every 5 flops, one actually hits and makes up for the rest. I would prefer the opposite, but that is not to be, so I guess I'm stuck watching 5 crap movies to find one I like. Good thing I'm retiring in a few years and will have time to spare

Good storytelling is good storytelling. Bad is bad.

Some examples of good storytelling (my view):
+ Doom Patrol (tv)
+ Umbrella Academy (tv)
+ Superman and Lois (tv)
+ Ironman
+ Avengers - Infinity War
+ Gotg
+ Daredevil (tv)

Bad:
+ Loki (yes, we still watched the entire first season)
+ Avengers End Game (talk about a letdown and lazy writing)
+ Captain Marvel
+ more MCU (too many to list)

Mediocre:
+ Black Panther (called out because not nearly as good as critically acclaimed)
+ Wonder Woman (epitomizes mediocrity in film)
+ Most other MCU films

Excellent (in this category): Nolan’s batman series… some others I am missing but not a particularly long list.

Is there any way someone can divine my politics or view on “woke-ism” from the above list? I doubt it…

I will still say some story telling elements are being made subservient to other considerations in many, many MCU films and shows lately. THAT is a legitimate, non-political critique. In some cases it even harms progressive politics.

As for the original source (website) from the OP, it is clearly biased.

As for the movie under discussion… can’t call it a flop or a hit… somewhere between. Will it be profitable? Unclear. Never saw the movie but likely will. Will withhold any comments on the story and movie itself until after watching it on D+.

Quick aside - musicians have combined art with politics since “time immemorial”… but we pay little heed when the message crowds out the music (delivery of the message).

There are also differences between music and how it matures (or changes or not) over time, but want to echo others that point out the mixing of art and agendas.

This woke whining shit again?

It’s amazing how easily enraged people are over some pencil lines and ink.

I’m always disappointed that people who can read about nerds, misfits, mutants, freaks and monsters are so easily triggered by homosexuals and trans people.

Art imitates life.

I could take this more seriously if people had this level of outrage to, say trying to steal an election.

But, authoritarianism is fine. Two guys kissing? Greatest outrage of all time.

Just disgraceful.

Since the MCU began it has taken extreme liberties with character origins, backstories, and costumes. Compare Kirby's scarlet witch vs the MCU version...or Quicksilver, or many others. Groot was never a superhero character.....Iron man should have begun in Vietnam not Afghanistan, but that would have truly mucked up the timeline and age of the character. Point being all these things altered and never any predictions of doom, of the biggest failure ever and how badly Marvel has failed.
Alter a single characters sexuality, gender or any other trait that is a flashpoint with the "anot-woke clan" mentioned above and we have forty days of darkness and dogs and cats living together.
It demonstrates what the truth is about the issue and what is pandering to hide it.

@DrWatson - This I know. I was cheekily saying let’s get a new Marlin Perkins/wild kingdom going. Good tv that is actually educational and entertaining at the same time.

Thinking retrospectively, perhaps Steve Irwin/Crocodile Hunter was the Re-Boot with more flash and flare. In more modern times, there have been a couple of amazing HD documentary mini-series, but the consistent weekly aspect and the personality is the missing links.

I always think it's strange when comic book fans, particularly of certain books, complain that things are too "politically correct" when so many books and storylines they love were metaphors for social issues.

WRONG! You missed the point. The thread isn't about people being "so easily triggered by homosexuals and trans people" as you put it. Not at all. It was about creating new original characters to give representation to the LGBT+ community in movies. Not to rile people up over trigger words.

And yet Disney bows to China and removes all the "wokeness" from their movies so they can be shown there. It is never a flashpoint for the "woke clan" to have it removed as long as the cash flow from that market stays positive. That should tell everyone what there is to know about the issue.

Then Above Average Joe should be called Beef Stew. That's about the dimensions of a #10 can ( 6 3/16" x 7" ) that one finds beef stew in at the grocery.

My family and I watched this literally EVERY Sunday night from 1965 to 1984. The only reason for stopping was my father died and I never had a family Sunday again.

It came on right before Walt Disney.

Now those are some good memories. Marlin would stay in the helicopter while Jim wrestled with the wild dogs/pigs/'gators/mandrill/etc. on the ground ... loved it.

Just a couple of factoids. I watched Mutual of Omaha and Marlin all the time.
The show was mostly faked it turns out, they would throw a baby moose into a mud pit for instance then rescue it, and lots of similar, quite cruel things. Marlin (when in his 80’s) famously punched a guy in the nose when asked about it. It is always troubling to look too close.
Back in the 1940’s there were more movie theaters than banks in America. Movie making was controlled by 5 big studios. They peaked at about 400 feature films a year. You add the British industry, the number of feature movies then is close to now, which peaked at about 800 feature films in 2018.
Of course there was no TV back then.
Still have not seen Eternals, but have the run and read it. Brilliant by Kirby, Hopefully they pulled off at least a hint of the complicated stew Kirby put together.
I don’t bat an eye at any what is called wokeness, but I sure like my girls colored blue, or green, or red. Probably not in that movie though, and definitely not wokeness.
