I have noted that often when buying higher end silver and golden age books from Mycomicshop.com for instance, they bag and board the book, using a fullback and mylite 2, then place that onto a cheaper board inside a cheapie bag as well...but once you get down to the comic itself it has a sheet of Micro chamber paper inserted . I have been considering perhaps adding it to my more key books but I wonder does it do more than filter out bad odors....does anyone have further knowledge or experience with the material and or/ideas/thoughts to offer? The concept itself appears sound...a thin chambered paper that captures escaping pollutants and so forth from the book...but does it work? Steve Borock would you give or have any input here yourself? |

I’ve pondered this as well. I’ve noticed CGC uses MIP in the slabs and CBCS uses a sheet of “plastic”(I guess for rigidity?) in the slabs.

I use Comic Extenders from BCW. I would imagine it would help with reducing the acidic smell after some time. Plus you can always replace them if they start really smelling bad. I use them more for providing added stiffness to the book along with the fullback and mylar. |

I've also used them with 10 mil mylars without any backing boards. It looks great, plus being able to see both the front and back cover without having to take the book out is a big benefit.

Funny that I've never seen the MCS microchamber. Which makes me realize that I've probably never actually taken any of the bigger MCS purchases out of the bag.

I mention this briefly in my book: Microchamber paper is typically found in books from the 60s-70s. Usually at the centerfold and under both covers. Experienced collectors and CGC use them in this fashion. It's effective against odors, brittle pages and yellowing. There is still a lot of debate over its effectiveness or the consequences of expired microchamber paper after 15 years or longer. |
