CBCS Canada Update?12136

Collector nancyraygun private msg quote post Address this user
Does anyone know if the Oakville, Ontario Warehouse has opened with phase 2 here in Canada?
I've had an order stuck there for a couple months now and I have had to hound poor Steve Paulus every couple of weeks to see if there's any update.
I had two potential sales lined up from this order but those buyers have moved on now.
I'd love to submit more but it's not worth it if my books will be held in limbo.

10 people have asked this this week, open more threads. I don't know what your part of the country is like but Windsor isn't even in phase 2 yet.

Yeah..Oakville is still in phase 1.

GTA, Hamilton and any region that borders the US are still in phase 1....not sure about us border regions...the US does not have this under control so it may affect our re-opening, certainly no crossings by car

It was a one trick pony show but always hilarious. GAC private msg quote post Address this user
By the looks of it Hamilton will stay phase 1 until they get their act together.

Hope to have some word soon?? Oakville was allowed to enter phase 2 yesterday - not sure what that means for the CBCS office but it has to be better than phase 1!!

I'm going to try an email Steve Paulus today. If I hear back from him, Ill post here.

I sent an email as well, hoping to get some clarification because it sounds like the office they are using is actually OPEN and their partner Universal Distribution is operating (they put out a notice saying they would be open for the holidays at that specific Oakville/Toronto location).

Seems so bloody dumb that CBCS isn't offering curb side pickup for us locals - we could come down and meet with Steve in person for drop offs, but can't ever do a pick up (especially NOW when the majority of businesses are offering that service during the shutdown)

No response from Steve. I'm sure he's getting pounded with emails asking about opening.
I wish CBCS would update us with something.

From Steve P.

The facility is still not able to re-open, I'm working with Universal Distribution to try and get the others shipped out to everyone. For right now I cannot cross the border and it looks like the soonest I'll be able to cross is the end of July. Although, if the Southern United States keeps spiking with COVID-19 cases It might be longer. So Drop-offs and pick-ups are not going to happen for a while, but the short term goal is to start shipping as soon as possible.

Right now, It looks like we are targeting next week.  to ship.

I cannot wait for life to return to normal

Steve

Didn't realize the logistics for CBCS Canada i.e. didn't realize they had to cross the border (to pickup books??)....if that is the case then we are screwed...current border closure is until July 21 and 100% it will be extended until such a time as the US gets the covid rates under control - sad but it is still a wild fire down there...gonna be 2021 I think...

Regardless of if they drive books over the border it doesn't explain why something hasn't been figured out to get out the backlog of books that are already sitting at the Oakville location (and have been there for 6 months or more). Is Steve trapped in the states? Does that mean CBCS hired one a single person to run their entire division in a different country and who doesn't even live nearby?

From what I've seen the facility itself is open right now, it's just Steve isn't there. Universal Distribution has posted which locations are open and still functioning in some capacity (which is evident when Steve says he is working with Universal Distribution to get other stuff shipped out).

Seeing that I am waiting for my order and the borders are closed.
I have a question?
Why isn’t CBCS contacting said parties and maybe offer us the choice to get the books directly to us?
I understand that the border closures are not under your control and it could go on until July, if not August.
Why let the boxes pile up?
CBCS has all our contact information, contact us and offer us the choice for direct delivery!
I’d rather pay the balance for shipping and get my books than let my books gather dust in some warehouse

I hear you - I would love it if they showed the tiniest bit of care and reached out to customers (even if it was to say 'sorry, nothing we can do at the moment but we are working on it!'). At this point it looks like a few possible things:

Their infrastructure is woefully underdeveloped and they have put little effort/resources towards improving things. This might mean they actually cannot easily sort and process who exactly they have books for and reach out easily with the CMS they are now using.

Lots of their submission tracking systems didn't migrate correctly as intended when they made the migration to this new site, and to this very day have not been fixed (for example, submitted comics won't show the final grades until they have already been completed and basically already delivered to you - its been a bug that even if they are graded and waiting to be shipped it won't show you the grades on the dashboard. Been like that for four years now after they said they are looking into it).

The other is employee time - from what I gather they don't really have that many employees, and I'm sure even less now due to the pandemic, so this might require someone to spend much more time processing orders and locating the packages in the warehouse than they are willing to spend money on.

BUT....these are just my guesses since that's all I have to go on since CBCS doesn't actually seem to go out of their way to make announcements or clarifying updates to their customers unless we hassle them.

I had always heard that this was to avoid calls/emails complaining about grades/asking for regrades while CBCS still had the books, which they got a lot of originally. But that could be wrong.

nope - it's a bug. You can find some of the requests by other members on the boards here asking about it and CBCS has stated it isn't working as intended. Here is one example where it is addressed (note the date, 4 years ago they were 'working hard' to resolve it....sigh) https://forum.cbcscomics.com/topic/337/page/1/submission-tracking/#7

That was 4 years ago after the migration. The policy has been changed and you can no longer see the grades until the order is shipped. CBCS has it designed that way. It is not a glitch. I just confirmed this. There may still be other glitches, but that is not one of them. And @xkonk is spot on as to the reason why.

It really sounds like they didn't plan on it originally, it was bug or un supported feature in the new system, and then they just accepted it and made up a decent policy reason for it to not be fixed (especially since it was mentioned by SteveBorock as being something not intended)

@SauceDog huh. Maybe by the time I joined the site everyone just accepted it. It's certainly on-brand for the website to be fixed #soon though.

I think this border closure is going to be with us for a while...just read an article on CBC saying it might be with us for 12 months

US has 40k new cases per day and rising which equates to 2k in deaths per day a month or two from now and rising as their infection rates rise - no way Canada is opening the border to anything other than essential travel

At some point they will clear the CBCS Canada book backlog and if the CBCS Canada operations depend on the ability to cross the border by land then I would expect a temporary suspending of the Canada operations.

Don't mean to be grim but I think that scenario is more likely than a return to 'normal'

Totally agree - border is going to stay closed for quite some time, which is understandable and I am happy to have done! Keep that baby locked down tight as long as possible please!

I'm more interested in what CBCS is doing about all the orders already in Canada, which has been sitting waiting to be shipped back out Canadians (orders that were cleared and already in the country months before the lockdown even happened). It would really sour my outlook of CBCS if the only reason nothing is happening is because they don't have anyone in the country to work the office onsite (which I know is technically open as other UD employees are on site doing some level of work). Transparency is key here.

They’ve had my books since mid-February I actually don’t mind waiting things are not their fault.

They should try to make an effort to update us and look at different shipping options. At least send the books off to be graded since most of the shipping companies are working. They could also offer to return them to us?

What is being done to protect the books while they have them??? These things may not be possible if they are not allowed to open in Ontario though I have trouble believing one person couldn’t go in with no risk and prepare everything. It would be good if they updated us. Happy Canada day!

If I direct mail to Dallas can I still use the CBCS Canada submission forms/pricing?
What I'll send will need pressing so with luck by the time pressing is done the border will be open (8 months ++??)

@SteveRicketts told me he is oping to have the pressing TATs to a reasonable level within 3 months

Cool - sadly right now I'm ok with the wait!!

Wonder if the reduction in show submissions is significant enough to impact the TAT's

Are we able to submit using CBCS Canada pricing and forms but mail straight to Dallas - at least get the process started? I usually send my books for a press so in 5 to 8 months maybe CBCS Canada will be up and running again in time for my books to get out of pressing - lol!!

DOesn't that defeat the purpose of CBCS Canada? I thought cheap shipping was part of the benefit.

Would still get the cheap return shipping - sounds like right now someone may receive the books but I don't think they are actually being sent to Dallas - maybe I'm wrong on that.

Once in Dallas I'm looking at a few months minimum....gives time for other stuff to shake out at the border
