So does the publisher or the market decide the first appearance?

Isn't that weird though. Marvel is telling everyone it's this book yet 181 is still a hot book. I don't own either book just have been tracking it for awhile to see which is the first.

It doesn't really matter. Incredible Hulk 181 is the book everyone wants as the first full appearance of Wolverine. He's on the cover.

@DrWatson Precisely! Theres no debate that 180 is his actual 1st appearance. He's on the last page head to toe, of 180. But the market says 181 is the big $ book...probably because as you say hes on the cover.

Exactly, that's just the way it is. I've never understood why people want Jimmy Olsen 134 as opposed to Forever People 1 as the first appearance of Darkseid when he's a little tiny square on a computer screen.

Would you rather see a small cameo of the hulk's next foe or get the whole fight and a sweet cover too boot?

I blame this on CGC. 1st appearance is still, IMO, first time I hear or see a character. Somewhere along the line, I think CGC made a boo boo (IH 181 and JO 134) with the 1st app, but the damage has already been done so they came up with that Cameo and Full 1st app non-sense. Just imagine you saw a girl/guy you like yesterday at the store, and then you saw her/him again today. Their 1st appearance was still at the store yesterday.

181 was the book to have long before the cgc showed up on the scene. People voted with their pocket books.

Why is this a debate? 1st app is 180, but the market has determined 1st cover app plus a full action packed story is worth more.

Eh I would rather have giant size X-Men 1 myself...2nd full appearance, first appearance Storm, Colossus,Nightcrawler, and a few others...as well as Lilian Rasputin who becomes Magik...white cover, classic Kane cover, square bound, tough as hell to find in high grade, and a lot better story told.

I've thought about this too and I think the reality is a supply difference. Next time you walk a convention count the number of JO 134 you can find vs the number of Forever people 1. I would guess that Jimmy Olson was a really low print run comic while Forever People 1 was probably printed at 10x the quantity. In the case of Hulk 180 and 181 they were both the same print run, probably on the lower end.

They’re not lying, Wolverine was “introduced in Incredible Hulk #180”.

Just glancing at the CGC census it shows well over 4,000 copies of 180 and over 12,000 copies of 181....suggestive that if the price levels were realized for 180 that have been seen for 181, it too would reach a much higher census figure. Factoring in the number of ungraded copies and copies that were slabbed via CBCS or PGX you can see that there might well be over 20,000 copies of 181 out there somewhere....and perhaps many more. It isn't a rare or hard to find book, but demand for wolverines first appearance has driven the price ….

Exactly correct. My point was that the ratio of available Jimmy Olsen 134 to Forever People 1 is probably very different than the ratio of Hulk 180 to Hulk 181 (which is most likely 1 to 1). I'm thinking this explains why a single panel appearance in Jimmy Olsen has a higher market value than the full first appearance in Forever People. At a local convention I might find 3-4 copies of JO 134 vs 30-40 copies of Forever People 1.

https://www.calcomiccon.com/ is worth the price of a plane ticket from just about anywhere in the country. Usually the last Saturday in January, all back-issue dealers from several states, very little riff-raff.

https://longbeachcomiccon.com/ Not as great, too much cosplay and riff-raff, but it's 10 minutes away from my home.

Those are the only two I attend anymore.

The year in that picture under Wolverine is wrong.

EDIT: Nevermind..its referring to the series year not the actual book year.

181 is overrated, because all the jabronis want it or have it (myself included in the latter). I need 180 to become the book to own only because my 180 is a lot nicer than my 181.

I am not so sure of those conclusions..the CGC census has 1371 Jimmy Olsen 134, vs 1420 copies of Forever people
