So as I continue to learn about grades especially in the mid grade range, I have come across another hulk 181 with the following grader notes: fade front cover light finger bends cover light spine stress lines back cover light wear all corners front cover breaks color The cover looks a lot better than my current 181 graded the same at a 6.0. My question is how much does fading affect the grade. My copy has more severe spine damage and several corner bends that break color. The color itself is nice and bright. Here is the cover of the comic I am referring to: ![]() |

That's some significant fading. Can't see the other flaws, but from your description I don't expect this book would grade quite as well as the one you have. It's a shot in the dark without a complete look at the book, but I'm thinking 4.5 to 5.

@CatCovers It was graded as a 6.0. I didn't take into consideration the fading when I first saw it. |

@moodswing are you considering buying this to sell or is it for your PC? I ask because if you're going to sell, many folks buy the book and not the grade (i.e. faded covers are tough sells). |

@GAC Not really. I would like to upgrade to a 7.0 at one point put I was just curious on the comparison between my 6.0 and this one. I initially didn't take into consideration fading. For some reason, I thought fading was like paper quality. I have read paper quality doesn't really affect the grade. |

Aside from the grade itself, I agree that the fading is a turn-off. When you know what the colors on a book are supposed to look like, the fade just looks bad.

@GAC I was saying I thought cover fading did affect grade not interior page color. With those minor defects, the comic should grade higher than a 6. The faded must have had an impact. |

Just an FYI from Overstreet. Slight Discoloration of a cover with no other defects starts you out best case scenario at a 6.5. So adding up your defects (corner conditions, staple stress lines etc.) will get you to the grade of your book. Nuff said other than love the book!

I went to a LCS that will be celebrating their 50 anniversary soon. It was heartbreaking to see that some of their best comics had displayed on the walls and must have been there for decades! Spiderman looked like Gwenpool with his nice pink costume. Dozens of comics looked like sketch covers with almost no color left at all. Many books I had dreamed of owning but couldn't afford, now are ruined.
