Oh, boy, that's beautiful. But that tear on the right side ... painful. Such a shame.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

Never really a fan of classic non superhero books but looking at a lot of these old time covers is pretty neat!

I have one of those in for grading right now. Unfortunately, I know for a fact that's not mine. I wish it was, though.

@sborock Looks like either 10 years on a shop's envy wall or about four days on a dashboard in August in Texas.

Having been in Texas in August a couple of years ago, I can attest to the heat.

Not sure why people live there. You would think people would just naturally move towards someplace not so ghastly hot in the summer.

It looks to be in decent condition otherwise.

Does the fading affect grading slightly or greatly for CBCS??

Thanks in advance!

Yes - I would guess in the 4.0 -5.0 area subject to anything which cannot be seen

@sborock I am very curious about what the grade of said book would be if it wasn't so faded vs the grade it will get for being so faded.

It is a pretty heavy defect and lowers the grade quite a bit.

Funny that you said that.

Back when Tim Taylor’s strode the earth, one of the LCS near me had a 181 on their shelf right next to where the sun would shine in.

You could practically watch the color fade from it.

I just figured it was added incentive for someone to buy...

Since we have detoured slightly into a discussion of sun fading and grades, I will offer up the following:

Had a client send in a ASM 1 with a Stan Lee signature. 6.5 in a CGC (green label) slab. Book had notable sun fading (not near so bad as the Hulk 181 picture, but notable) Wanted the signature verified so sent to CBCS. Signature passed but grade dropped from 6.5 to 5.5.

Unhappy with grade drop the book was sent back to CGC for the crossover grading thing. Back to 6.5 with a green label.

And the CGC fan boys say CBCS is to soft on grading.....

Thanks for posting these books. It is a great chance to see them, and almost certainly the only time many of us ever will. You made me go back and pull Defenders 4, which is a beautiful cover.

I'm amazed hearing your stories of buying these books off the newstand and bus stations as a kid with a shiny dime and still own them 75 years later.

👍

@sborock Missed out on a copy of that by $10 at a recent auction. Painful.

@vacaboca Croc-dude shows up more than once - I'm pretty sure he's on at least two covers. No idea what his story is, though.
