Musky Smelling Comics9773

Collector Noblebeast315 private msg quote post Address this user
Just got a Tomb of Dracula #7 in easy 8.5 condition. I plan to clean and press it and add to my private collection, but it is a mighty musky smelling book. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to lessen the smell. I am currently just letting the book air out, but I wasn’t sure if there was anything else I could do to help. Oddly enough I always seem to think the process of cleaning and pressing the books seems to improve the smell, but I have no specific reason for why I think this happens. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you all!

Put book in a plastic container with a bowl or container of baking soda in and then seal lid.

Maybe it will help?

@OGJackster oh my gosh, not like cat pee. If it smelled like cat pee I would just send it back! It smells musky like an old book that was left in a humid environment.

Sorry to be the grammar Nazi here, but your comics smell "musty", not "musky". Musty is a wet or rotting smell... Musky usually refers to an animalic smell, produced traditionally in perfumery by harvesting glands from the Musk Deer. At first I imagined your comic smelled like a big hairy Serbian man with his shirt half-buttoned..

@Turbo

So. Instead of thoughts of bambi, your thoughts drift toward a semi clothed exotic foreign man....

I wonder what Freud would say?

When I get a book that has a strong Oder, I place a piece of micro chamber paper in between each page. The MC will neutralize the Oder. Time does vary depending on how “deep” the smell is in the paper. I’ve done this with my early Peanuts books and have had great success

yes, microchamber paper is the way to go....I wouldn't introduce any chemicals to your books like baking soda or dryer sheets. MC paper is designed to absorb off gassing from paper. I'd go with that.

@Bronte LOL! It’s not about the source of the material, but rather who has the social ineptitude to actually wear it these days! Like my Calc 3 prof...

...with the musty smell! I actually like it. Reminds me of my comics from when I was a kid.
Thanks!

I had this problem with some comics I bought on eBay several months back. Placing a free and clear dryer sheet inside the books was effective. It didn’t eliminate the odor completely but it did dramatically reduce it.

Don't think I've every heard of this before. I may have to buy/try some of this for some of my old beaten copies.

@etapi65 I’ve been using micro-chamber paper for years. I use it with all of my production material, sketches, storyboards, autographed photos and comics. I have seen (and smelt) the difference when MCP is used.

I’m going to to look into it this weekend as well. I have seen the Micro Chamber sheets in a couple of graded books I have popped open. I wasn’t fully sure why they were there but get it now.

Hang the book out the window and drive around town pretty fast. Smell gone. I put a dryer sheet in a tupperware type container for a few days, the smell was pretty much neutralized. You can smell it only of you put your nose to it but it didn't give off the strong odor that it did. Helped about 80%

I have de mustified plenty of books. Rub hand across each page then place page by page in front of fan for 5-10 min each. Works like a charm.

Ok folks here is an update on my de “mystify” attempt. I ended up trying the comic in a plastic container with a dryer sheet route and I don’t honk it worked that well. I placed the comic in the bin with a sheet of release paper (what I use when pressing comics) underneath the book. I made sure it was nice and flat before outing the book in. Then I taped 1 single dryer sheet to the bottom of the lid so there would be no chance of contact with the book. I left the book in for 36 hours and my opinion of the results is the book came out smelling like both the dryer sheet and the “Must”.

None of my LCS sell
Micro chamber sheets but I will probably still pursue them though EBay.

Sorry Kav, I am not sure I understand your hand swipe fan method. I do appreciate your input though. Botha is and all the best!
