What the heck is a 9.9 worth? TMNT 95...9746

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock Tedsaid private msg quote post Address this user
So, in a couple days I'm getting my very first 9.9 grade in the mail. I just saw my grades update online, and the 9.9 is in transit now.

Well ... my first non-prestige-format 9.9. Everyone got one for Batman Damned, right? And Detective Comics 1000 had quite a few, too. (I even got one of those Detective 1000's, out of five or six copies submitted.) But for a regular comic? This is my first. In 3-4 years of sending comics to get graded - and a lot of brand new ones, too - this is the only 9.9 I've achieved.

And I didn't even have it pressed first! Crazy, huh?

Now I'm trying to a) figure out what it might be worth, and b) figure out if I should sell it, and how?

I'm leaning towards an auction on eBay, because this comic is VERY hot right now. It's the 1:10 retailer incentive cover of TMNT #95 (pictured below). Heck, most people don't have ANY graded yet, let alone a 9.9.

What do you guys think? Is the hype sustainable? Will people wait and see how rare 9.9's are, or jump at the first one they see? After the Batman Damned fiasco, with the number of 9.9's + 10.0's = 9.8's, people are probably more cautious now on 9.9's, especially this close to the release date. Or does that not matter, since this is a normal comic, not prestige format?

Any insights into this, from the forum's vast experience? I would really appreciate any and all thoughts on the matter, especially from the guys with a lot of experience selling comics. Thanks in advance.

There are very few books that are as skewed as Batman: Damned was so I don't see that book alone really affecting the insanity of the 9.9/10 Market. Beyond that, I have no idea how to price one. If you see auctions consistently closing at good prices (at presumably lower grades), it might be worth giving it a shot but there's always the risk that it won't sell for as much as you could have gotten.

The other option is using a Buy-It Now and being open to offers. That way it won't sell for anything less than what you're comfortable with.

First - congratulations! I've never managed to break the 9.8 ceiling, no matter how flawless the book happened to be.

Second - I don't see Batman Damned having any impact on the Wild West market of 9.9s and 10s. I'm tempted to say you should put it up for auction, as you don't know how crazy bidding might get. Then again, it's not my book, so naturally I'm more inclined to take a risk.

Hahahaha ... yeah, that's the rub, isn't it? I'll be telling folks to do an auction, too, if it weren't mine.

I'm not a big fan of them, but you could do an auction with a reserve, set at a price you are comfortable with. If the book doesn't hit that mark, you could try again with a different format or venue.

Good to keep that in mind, definitely. Heh ... problem is, I don't have any idea what the "right" price is! 9.9's are so crazy with some collectors, it's basically free money, no matter what it sells for.

Spot on.

The hype will continue for a few more issues. This is all the build up to issue 100 so it will stay on the front burner until then.

About tree fiddy.

If you're looking for a serious answer...

Probably twice the price of a 9.8/NM+.

I would start at $1000 BIN and work your way down as offers come in (if they do)

I have 2 non prestige 9.9s myself:

I find the Year of the Villain 1:500 in a 9.9 is pretty impossible to obtain and this has to be the only one. Very thin book, large staples, poor quality paperstock...this one is a unicorn, for sure. The Detective Comics 9.9 is probably a little more common to get being a thicker book with more pages and better paper.

So far, as the Census has not been updated yet, you are the only one with a 9.9 for TMNT #95 RI

I have a 9.8 in transit today myself so I am one of the 9.8s so far

Myke beat me to it. Yeah, $1k Buy-It-Now with a Best Offer option.

I’d list it immediately once it arrives. These issues are hot at the moment. Interest is very likely to cool down.

Wow! That IS a unicorn. Very nice! Thanks for posting the census, too. How long does it take to update, do you think?

I'm leaning towards that, definitely ... just put it up, WAY high price, see who nibbles. A friend in another group said, "Put it up for $2k OBO and accept any offers over $600." Sounds like a wise plan.

I've always said, 9.9's and 10's are so ridiculously expensive, the only way I will ever own one is if I get it personally. But now I realize, they are so ridiculously expensive, it's not worth keeping for myself, either, even though I didn't "pay" for it. Better to get a bronze age, high-grade key with the money.

I love the turtles, but I think I'd rather have, say, a Green Lantern 76 in 8.0.

You have better chances to get the most out of it if you are the first to market. I would recommend doing an auction with a reserve price you'd be comfortable with (say, twice the price of a 9.8). After more than one 9.9 comes to market you'll see a lower price tag on the second one. Be prepared as price could be extremely high if auctioning.

That's great advice. Though it is hard even to tell what a 9.8 would go for. These seems to be selling for $70 - $80 raw. That would mean 9.8's are probably $200 or $250, give or take.

I will likely put it out for a very high BIN, and then change to a 7-day auction Sunday night, and just see what happens. Anyway, I'll post here once the eBay listing is up.

I don't even know how to value a Detective Comics 9.9 from 1995, especially with only 8 on the census. Because of that I see the thing as nothing more than a novelty item.

I probably worded that post wrong. It's the only 9.9 on the census, with 7 others below it in the 9.4-9.8 grades.

Even being the only one, I feel I'd have to start ridiculously high if I decided to put an asking price on it. But it fits a certain 'cover theme' I collect, so it'll stay as "curiosity".

Not golden age? There is a Vault of Horror #27 from 1952 in 9.9. (And six 9.8's!)

Anyone know of an older 9.9?

Also, this is pretty awesome. Classic CBCS label, too.
