Huge new update to CLZ, linked to GoCollect.com9692

Collector farseer private msg quote post Address this user
Yes here it is, the BIG ONE! The biggest and most important Comic Collector update since years, maybe even since its' launch in 2002. In fact, if this update does not motivate you to upgrade your Comic Collector, then I don't know what will :-)

With today's 19.3 update, Comic Collector will finally give you automatic comic values, thanks to our new collaboration with the popular GoCollect.com comic book price guide:

Get comic values from Core, powered by GoCollect.com
Find out which are the most valuable comics in your collection. Just set a Grade for your comics, then Update Values from GoCollect based on that grade.
Lots of new value-related fields:
Grade, Grading Company, Grader Notes, Slabbed vs Raw, Signed By, Is Key Comic (yes/no) and Key Reason.
More fields now sync to/from CLZ Cloud:
New syncing fields: Back Cover, Plot, Nr of Pages, Genres, Country and Language. Also, all new value-related fields immediately sync with CLZ Cloud / Comic Connect.
For full details and screen shots:

How to update to Comic Collector 19.3
Your Comic Collector subscription (previously called "Update Plan" expired on 30/6/2016, so before you can update to version v19.3, you need to renew your subscription:

Go to the CLZ Shop here
Now LOGIN with your CLZ Account (very important!)
Then at the top, under "Comic Collector", select one of the payment options:

Pay monthly, for US $2.95 per month, auto-renewing
(only available if your subscription expired less than 6 months ago)
Pay yearly, for US $29.95 per year

Finally, click "Proceed to checkout" and complete the payment.

Then, when your renewal has completed:
Start your currently installed version of Comic Collector.
Choose "Check for Updates" from the Help menu.
Click "Update Now!" to proceed.
About the comic values from GoCollect:
GoCollect determines values based on actual sales on auction sites.
Also, values are based on sales of of CGC/CBCS graded comics only.
The above is an excellent way to determine reliable and up-to-date values, but it also means that GoCollect cannot provide values for each and every comic that exists. If for a specific comic there are no recent transactions of slabbed copies, its' value is unknown.

In other words, this new feature is a cool way to find the most valuable comics in your collection, but, for now, it will not help to automatically determine the value of your entire collection.

How to download the values for your comics:
To get a value for your comics, you need to set a Grade value (e.g. "9.6".

First, when updating to v19.3, your Grades will be set based on your "old" Condition field (if possible).
(your old Condition values will also be copied to the Grader Notes field)
For the rest of your comics, use the Edit Multiple feature to set the Grade.
We've set up a special manual page on how to do this.
For future additions, set a default Grade (through Tools / Field Defaults).
Or use the new Grade field in the "Quick Fill" popup that appears when adding.

Active subscription required!
Obtaining the pricing data from GoCollect and manually linking that data to the specific issues in our Core is very costly and time-consuming. Our content managers have spent months and months doing this manually for all existing GoCollect values and are now linking new GoCollect values on a daily basis.
For this reason, the pricing data will be only delivered from Core if you have an active subscription for your Comic Collector software (previously called "Update Plan " or "Service Plan".

This is a nice addition they've made.

Sorry if this isn't clear, but do you know if they are forcing you to subscribe to get updated GoCollect data on an ongoing basis?...I know the subscription model was previously for version updates, but wondering if the data is now tied into it.

Yes, you are forced to have an active subscription:

Are we getting any new free features if you already bought the full version?

My subscription ended in June. I’ll have to check it out!

What sucks is that I have all my graded book details on a custom tab and my key book details are in the Tags field so I would have to update info on all those books

If you don’t have an active subscription then you are stuck on your current version, since the main purpose of the subscription is to get you new version updates. That said, if you update to this version and your subscription expires, thus halting future GoCollect value updates, there are still a few new additional features that you still have access to:

So after buying the full version you still have to buy a monthly subscription to get any new features?

@farseer Ok. So I already have the $5.99 per month subscription to GoCollect which I love. I have had a couple pictures of beer and cannot make sense of the details. What advantages will this give me beyond what I have now? Thanks, the drinking fool. Lol.

@moodswing yes. The way it used to work is that buying the full version allowed you use of the software indefinitely and included 6-months of updates, after which you retain access to the latest version of the software you had access to. Additional updates beyond that require paying for update plans.

That said the software is now being described as "subscription software" for $30/yr and I'm reaching out for clarification as to how the software works after this latest update since the website describes various features that I have access to on my older version as being covered by the subscription fee and I'd rather keep my current older version than have those features dependent on a subscription fee.

Finally, for anyone interested in getting any of their software (including mobile apps) or subscribing, you can use the promo code CLZTRIAL to get $5 off your order ($29.99 or more as far as I can tell)

My guess not much. The subscription fee for the app is cheaper than gocollect so it sounds like there is no reason to pay gocollects price now.

I just have the app. I assume I just won't have access to gocollect unless I do the subscription upgrade. I would hope the app itself still will be updated. Doesn't make any sense to make the app obsolete after I paid full price for it.

GoColllect implementation is part of the latest update, so if you don't have an active update subscription to get the latest version you won't get GoCollect or any of the other features included in the update.

The apps are hardly obsolete without the latest updates. I used my version for years just fine until they released an update that included a feature I wanted and I paid for the shortest update plan available to get it.

Gocollect made it easy to price my graded books at the show I set up at a couple weeks ago. And I did sell a couple of them which justifies getting more of them graded. The next batch will have another Nova #1, Eternals #1, Young Avengers #1, ASM #50 that I picked up at the live auction, Savage She Hulk #1 Newstand copy, Avengers 196, Micronauts#1, Devil Dinosaur#1. All of these will be in the 9.0 's + except ASM #50. I would like you guys to give me the 1 book that you would delete from this list. Just curious which one gets the least love. B.

So after communicating with support for a bit they do recommend contacting them for specific licensing questions but here are the broad strokes.

Starting in February of this year the desktop software moved to a subscription model. So if you were a new customer after the switch then you can use the software to keep track of your comics but accessing their CLZ Core database to quickly add comics with info/cover art, backing up on CLZ Cloud, and using their Find Cover Art Online, and now GoCollect value updates features are all dependent on having an active subscription.

If you Purchased the full version of CLZ before the update plan model even existed (before October 2013) then you would be considered a New Customer if you upgraded to the latest version and so the features listed above would be tied to an active subscription (the CLZ Cloud option wasn’t even available at that point and the Find Cover Art Online feature isn’t vital, I never use it).

If you purchased the full version of the app after the update subscription change then you are grandfathered in and will retain full use of CLZ Core, the CLZ Cloud backup, and the Find Cover Art Online features if you update to the latest version and your subscription lapses, but you would miss out on the updated values from GoCollect.

Good I was not going to be a happy camper if a program I paid full price for became unusable. Not good business.

Your software wouldn’t become unusable anyways as you’d keep your functioning software as-is if you chose not to update.

Would it still use the comic book database? I couldn't imagine adding everything by hand.

Yes, if you purchased the full version before the switch to the subscription model in February and chose not to upgrade to the current version yes, you would still have access to their CLZ Core database for adding new books.

I've had some time to play around with the latest update and overall I really enjoy it, though there is certainly room for improvement going forward.

1. The GoCollect implementation is nice. You put in the condition of the book and it'll pull the value from GoCollect. It only does this for the blue-label price, which is fine for many and basically serves as a starting point for those of us with a lot of yellow/red/etc labels. I do hope they add a field to specify the label type and certification number for each book. At the moment you can only say if it is slabbed and by who. Also, the Grade field doesn't include non-traditional grades like CBCS' "ART" label or CGC's "NG" label.

Also, while GoCollect is implemented for most major books and series, linking books to their GoCollect record seems to be a work in progress and is likely why it requires an active subscription. For example, all the regular Amazing Spider-Man issues seem linked up just fine. Some variants are not, which is understandable because GoCollect has never been comprehensive when it comes to variants. Some books, which I know GoCollect has records for, like Batman: Harley Quinn, are not yet linked. Hopefully more and more books get linked as time goes on.

2. I really like that they implemented a "Signed By" field, it's just unfortunate that the information isn't currently displaying on the Details page for the book, meaning you have to open the Edit Comic screen to see everyone that has signed the book. I'm not sure if this is a bug or an oversight but it seems like something that should be addressed.

3. It's nice to have native fields specifying if a book is a key and why. I do hope they change the Key Reason field to a different data type so you can create folders to sort by and quickly see Key Books sorted by subject. I had renamed the "Tags" field to "Key Notes" and what I like about that is that I can give each Key note a sort name so Keys like "First Appearance of Daredevil" and "Daredevil gets classic Red Costume" could be sorted together like "Daredevil, 1st Appearance" and "Daredevil, Gets New Costume" making it easy to see all my Daredevil Keys together.

Anyways, it is a very good update to the desktop software. It's not perfect but it is a great start and if they keep updating and listening to feedback, I can see it getting even better.

@dielinfinite do you get the full version of gocollect that shows all sales and for how much?
Post 19 IP   flag post
COLLECTOR dielinfinite private msg quote post Address this user
No, it’s not a replacement for a GoCollect subscription. The app pulls the current average value of the book (real or projected based on the values of the book at other grades) at that grade

So it just links to the free version. Sounds like an easy pass for me then.
