Detective Comics 359 CBCS 9.2 - Trying to figure out the timeline.9681

Collector Buzzetta private msg quote post Address this user
So it was brought to the attention of a few that CBCS graded a copy of Detective Comics 359 as a 9.2 Universal that eventually was graded by 'someone else' as a 9.4 Trimmed with Color Touch...

After some research I was able to determine the following:

The CBCS copy was graded first and was sold on 8/29/2018 for $10,405 LINK: http://comiclink.com/auctions/item.asp?id=1268769

The 'other grading company' 9.4 Restored copy was graded on 4/16/2019 and was later sold on ComicLink at an unknown date for $869

Someone got screwed to the tune of over $9,500...

So, if the original owner is on these boards what happened here? Obviously the book changed hands from whoever submitted it to CBCS and whoever submitted it to 'the other grading company.'

The books are the same by the marks on the front cover exclusive to the book. (Someone filled in part of the checkerboard.)

So here is my question... what happened? Whoever paid $10k+ for the book sold the book at a monumental loss it seems... OR did CBCS take the other graded company's book back? Anyone over here have any other information on the book?

Yes, I expect to be bashed. But do so only if you can provide more information on what happened here. One of the two companies botched the grade... which one is debatable. I am more interested in the story between going from $10k+ to barely $1k.

If it is permissible to post scans of the books from both companies then I will.

I dont see you getting bashed-you are merely submitting information and asking for information.

So did cgc cracked it and regraded it and it came back restored? The link you posted, look at the alignment along the spine, looks straight. The right edge tapers slightly, looks like that's where it was trimmed.

@Buzzetta You can post pictures of CBCS and CGC slabs only. If CGC was the other grader, posting pics is ok.

The CBCS version of this book was graded first as it was sold at auction in August of 2018
The CGC version of this book was graded after that as the notes indicate a grade date of April, 2019.

Obviously the books are one in the same. The book may have been pressed at some point between CBCS and CGC. However indicators are the alignment and the filled in square of the checkerbox in the upper part of the book along the word "Detective"

yes... look like CGC cracked it and regraded it and it came back restored.

The bigger issue is that whoever had it graded by CGC already sold the book at auction. Both books can be found in the Comiclink sales history.

What do you mean 'already had it sold'? you mean while it was being graded at CGC he sold it?

i accidentally edited out the word 'and then' when I retyped the sentence.

I'm not totally convinced that they are the same comic. Some of things I've noted could be reflection, newton rings or foreign objects, but there is enough there to make me question it. Plus, side by side like this, the CGC looks darker. Unless this comic was bought and sold by the same person, and they stated that they are the same, I'm just not convinced. I'd think that anyone who lost that much money would have screamed bloody murder by now. Since this hasn't come up until you found it, I have to wonder why the last seller is silent.

No two books are cut exactly the same. Those books are cut exactly the same. Down to the micron. Staples are exactly the same amount oxidized. Numerous accidental characteristics are identical.

At first I thought that perhaps you could be on to something. That was easily dismissed by the exact box being filled in the exact way. Those marks are added and exactly the same.

The things that you point out could be from the differences in scanning. I have actually had this happen to me when scanning the books from different companies. Whatever the properties are of the slabs between the two companies is, they definitely tend to scan differently.

I ran an experiment to test the grading of CBCS when they first opened their doors. I had a handful of CGC books graded by CBCS and have / had scans of all of them. I can tell you that in both cases the scans were different by grading company in picking up nuances of color.

Blacks though, were picked up by both in the same way. I noticed this a copy of Detective 164 and my Captain America 47 that I had graded by CGC -> CBCS -> back to CGC.

Just checked my post history... never said that... the last exchange we had was me posting a Bill Hader popcorn gif and you said something about me trying to offload jewelry here. I never responded...

Maybe you are confusing me with someone else...
