Grading Help NeededQuestions

Question about major defect/crease9614

Collector Beney117 private msg quote post Address this user
According to my local comic book shop owner, the crease on the lower right corner is a major defect that decrease the value by a lot. As someone who is not familiar with grading, I just want a second opinion on that, and be sure that he did not intend to make me believe my comic is not worth much.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
A color breaking crease is indeed a big deal if the comic is otherwise in strong shape. If the comic is already a 7ish or lower the crease might not be as big a deal.

The rest of the book looks good. I would worry too much but you can always have it graded.

According to the one that sell it to me, it’s a 7.0. According to the comic shop owner, it’s between a 4 and 5 (because of the crease).

THat's a nice looking copy. It's not a 4-5. Might also not be a 7.0, but closer to that than a 4.0 (edited meant to type 4 here)

@Beney117 - Not bad, looks to be in the 6.0 to 7.0 range from your pictures. Don’t sell it to your LCS, offer it up on the forums!

Did the LCS owner try to buy it off you?

That was his intention, so I don’t trust him at 100%

yeah sounds like he wanted to lowball you! I would have it graded and then you will know for sure it's grade.

this is one that I own, I'm going to have to agree with the lcs 4-5 range, no way it's a 7

Can't say too confidently without seeing the back (check out the stain and stuff on Batman66's) but the crease along would not make it a 4-5. I would say more like 5-6 from the front cover.

There's the crease in the bottom right , the crunched corner in the top right, multiple colour breaking ticks in spine along with the spine roll ..

Agree with others, possibly not as low as lcs said , but also not much higher .

@Beney117 Your lcs is trying to take advantage of you. If that crease were the only defect, then yes it would have a substantial impact. Given the other flaws, its effect on the grade is lessened.

I'd say 5.5 or 6 as well, given what we can see.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

That is exactly what I think too! Some LCS are shady and will lowball customers

If you're looking to sell it, sell it here, you'll do much better. Start with what you feel it's worth and go down from there if needed.

Otherwise, nice copy and good luck!

Not to derail the conversation, but i wanted to give you some insight from the grading company's perspective.

When training people how to grade comics, we tell them to "give the book the highest grade you can give it, without giving it the wrong grade." We then tell the grader to put themselves into the position of a buyer, and to honestly ask themselves that "if you bought that particular book from a seller who gave it that grade, would you be happy with your purchase?" The actual grade of the book is the balance between those two scenarios.

What's the definition of the wrong grade? What I consider to be the wrong grade and what they might consider to be the wrong grade could potentially be two completely different wrong grades. What happens then, a 5.5 CBCS Electric Black?

I think that comic is a 6.5, possibly a 7.0. The two examples do, indeed, look better. Especially Batman66's, which seems to have sharp color and gloss. That's what worries me the most about this example: the loss of cover gloss (which may just be the light). But the two graded examples both have quite a lot of staining on the back, which REALLY hurts a grade. Of course we can't see the second one, but I looked up the notes and they say: "LOTS of staining to back cover; spine stress breaks color; creases bottom front cover breaks color." Conversely, the OP's back cover looks like a 9.0. And it looks like the staples are tight, which is important, too. I'd guess the page quality is OW/W.

Anyway, a crease like that will bring the grade down, but not that low, as others said. It keeps it from ever going above a 7.0 or 7.5, regardless of other defects; but it doesn't push it down much below that grade, either. That is, the lower the overall grade, the less such a color break crease will matter.

You should probably get it graded if you are looking to sell it. That will take away (most of) the uncertainty.
