I found a listing for an auction that's ending tonight that looked pretty interesting (enough for me to bid on 20 lots or so!) They have some random groupings of silver, bronze, copper and modern books that I thought was odd, but not unheard of. After examining all of the lots, I noticed one book I was interested in, Fantastic Four 67, was really white, and a X-men 28 was super bright red. None of the photos have shots of the back covers. I did a google search for reprints and found info on JC Penney Reprints, also called Marvel Vintage Packs. Basically all the real nice books in this auction are reprints that I am not interested in. Luckily I've been outbid on all those lots. If anybody is interested in these reprints you'll find a lot of them here at Andreas Auctions. It starts closing in an hour or so. Hopefully nobody gets ripped off on a high bid for a questionable value book.

Diamond distributed them also. I bought one set at a comic shop. I thought I had a picture of a catalog page for them, but the image I found was a different solicitation. ![]() I was hoping that would show them, but it doesn't. |

The worst thing about these reprints are that they are very hard to spot. Most have a MacFarlane Spider-man in the barcode box, but on a comic originally made years before he drew Spider-man. All of them have different ads on the back cover (mostly Stridex ads). And a sharp eye can see that the silver age books that are reprinted are narrower than the originals (credit goes to a youtuber named animalvader1 for pointing that out).

I was thinking they were exact reprints. They could easily fool someone into thinking they are originals. Again though, I bought a set through a comic shop, so Diamond must have solicited them. This reminds me that Walmart used to sell a Comic Book Collecting Kit that said it had an Eeek! the Cat comic in it. I was almost willing to buy the kit to get the comic. I've never seen an Eeek! the Cat comic in a comic book store. Evidently, three issues were published by Hamilton. The kit was just overpriced bags and boards along with the comic. There was probably something else stupid in the kit. Definitely overpriced. |
