Arte Johnson, a comic actor who won an Emmy for playing a diverse troupe of characters on the groundbreaking comedy show “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 90.

During his early television career, Johnson appeared in the CBS sitcom It’s Always Jan, the short-lived NBC sitcom Sally, the military drama series Hennesey, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, the anthology series GE True, McHale’s Navy, The Andy Griffith Show, The Jack Benny Program, Bewithced, The Donna Reed Show, Lost in Space and Rod Sterling’s Night Gallery. The 5’4” comic’s breakthrough came with the smash hit NBC series Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. Between 1968 to 1971, Johnson entertained audiences with his various characters. Among the most popular was the cigarette-smoking German soldier Wolfgang who was under the impression the war was still going on. Wolfgang would often comment on preceding sketches with his now iconic catchphrase “Very interesting…” Johnson later reprised this role while voicing the Nazi-inspired character Virman Vundabar on an episode of Justice League Unlimited.
