So earlier I received an email saying "Congratulations! You have a future credit with us, please review the attachment for details" so that made me wonder why would I have a credit.

I checked my submission referenced in the email only to find that grades have not populated the dashboard yet, however one of the books submitted, a True Believers Wolverine #1 (Frank Miller cover) that I remarked with acrylic paints and signed along with Joe Rubinstein, said $4 next to it.

So I called customer service and he brings it up and sees that yes a book was rejected. I asked about the $4. he says the $4 is the "rejection fee". This is my first rejected book so please excuse my eyebrows hitting the ceiling. There were only 3 books in this submission so I already am losing out on shipping and they're not only denying a book but charging me for it.

Customer service fella says he has to submit a request for more info and will call me back. I would like to resolve this before the books ship to me.

What are some of the reasons a book would be denied? Until this situation I only ever heard of books being denied due to lewd cover art.

I had one that was rejected by accident a few months back. I spoke with customer service about it. There wasn't anything lewd or odd about the book (Transformers book), it was just rejected. Anyways, it was determined to have been a mistake, and I got some free fast passes for it that I haven't used yet.

@Studley_Dudley A mistake. Oh man. How does that even happen?

I don't know. We're all human, so mistakes are bound to happen from time to time. That's the best I can figure on it.

For what it's worth. I had a complication with an order just submitted. They called twice and said he would get back to me each time.

I checked my book recently and they credited me the cost and did not let me know by call or email.

My point is, stay persistent, but check your invoice before calling. They may have corrected it and didnt communicate it.

Regardless, good luck.

Some of my first submissions years ago included a bunch of pristine Jay Company variants. They were all rejected, turns out the double cover was an issue for slabbing. At least at CBCS.

Could be a rejection based on the sketch or the signature maybe? Did you go for verification or ASP or anything like that?

Don’t acrylic paints end up with raised textured features? Might be an issue for slabbing. Have you done this before?

Books can get rejected for lots of reasons (not just nudity/pornography). Some that I have heard over the last few years include: for being too large, too thick, having too much overhang between the cover and interior pages, having studs or other raised surfaces, etc. If slabbing in any way could potentially cause damage to the book, that’s reason for rejection.

@Drogio I have several acrylic remarked books that I have done in slabs from CBCS.

I called customer service again and they informed me that the book was not encapsulated because it "Had an overhang protruding from the top of the book and would damage the book to encapsulate it"

This is incorrect, the book was painted to cover the True Believers stamp and I am left to assume that they only glanced at the book and thought I added to the book's length in some way. It was done with spraypaint and left quite smooth. See below.

Customer service says they will try to get them to take another look at it, but this feels like I'm calling another country and asking them to pass notes to the company I am paying to do this work wor me. This is clearly not in house customer service any longer and I cannot express my frustration in not being able to get any help at all.

The fact that the customer service guys got a response to the initial inquiry from HQ and didn't call me like they said they would leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

@Masochism what is this double print thing going on with it?

I'd definitely get in touch with then before the book leaves the site and explain that the top was a "True Believers" print and you repainted it, it's not added on nor does it over hang.

@GanaSoth that's a double exposure glitch from my cell phone camera. There is nothing off about the actual cover just don't have any other pictures except these (below) that are from my set up at MegaCon

You can see I signed it on the top there. Book is smooth, nothing overhanging or bubbling up.

Is there a way to get in touch with in-house customer service?

@Masochism - I would try sending a message to Jake Fleming and/or Steve Ricketts. I assume one or both are inhouse.

I don't own any, but that's nice to know.

Curious... does painting the cover like that dramatically reduce the grade?

@ninjarobert If it is intentional then no, it does not.

This one is a 9.6 but not due to the paint. I'll look for photo proof but I have gotten 9.8 on remarked books in the past.

hmmm, wonder if I should call them as well then. I had a submission from Megacon. When the notes popped up it was missing 2 of the 7 signatures. I emailed them about it. The reply e-mail said "please respond to us immediately with more information". I assumed they meant respond to the e-mail, but I didn't know what details they wanted. SO I described the witnesses that were there, indicated I swore they wrote down the sigs when I saw them fill out the paperwork, described where the sigs were on the comic...the indicated it might be rejected if they can't figure it out. I still swear I saw the guy write down the sigs. Worst part, I didn't get a copy of the invoice when they packed them all up. They kept all three copies...

But you painted over the 'trade dress'. The artist did not paint a remark. Aren't those very different things?

@ninjarobert I'm not sure which book you're referring to but there are remarks painted on everything posted in this thread.

Maybe I'm confused... didn't you paint over the "True Believers" dress on the Wolverine book? Or are you saying someone 'remarked' over it?

@ninjarobert Painted blood all over Wolverine's face & claws and painted the top of the book so I could sign in the empty area.

Gotcha... just curious. Never heard of anyone painting over a book like that.

Looks like it based on the pic of his table setup. Never questioned his ability.

Was just curious about painting over a cover like that. Like could the title be painted over and a new title be added in by an artist without effecting grade? That'd be pretty cool.
