Yeah, I got this too. Was suspicious so opened it on a Chromebook. Chromebooks are largely immune to viruses and malware and should you somehow get one Chromebooks are ridiculously easy to reset. Once I opened it was obvious something not right. The only reason I even opened it at all is that everything I checked indicated WeTransfer was a legitimate service. But anyway I emailed Steve to let him know maybe his email had been hacked and then I got his "on vacation" auto reply. Proof #2 something amiss. Thanks Jesse for posting up here. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Bronte I have an email account that I only use for suspicious sites. There was evidently a comic related website that collected a lot of emails from comic fans and industry employees. Can't remember the site name, but I remember thinking "I don't trust this site." I even remember doing a domain name search and IP address query. At some point I determined it was a marketing company just collecting a list of email addresses to spam. I abandoned using the site. That email address ended up on a spam list along with hundreds of other comic collectors. I knew they'd captured passwords too. I assume they used a proxy site that captured all the data the user entered when they left the site. Either way, I had already changed the password and I rarely ever use it for anything. Earlier this year, hackers and generally evil people compiled a lot of the separate lists that had been collected over the past decade or so and compiled them into one big comprehensive list. They posted the list on sites like pastebin.com . It's a site where people share computer code and things that can be used for shady activities. You might see home addresses for all the top govt. officials on there one day or a list of North Korean IP addresses the next. I actually surfed a North Korean website once to see what kind of anti-American propaganda was there. It was different. I get spam at that one email address. If they write offering me an inheritance or wanting to start a business, I usually tell them I'm rich and I don't need their African money. I tell them Americans don't need or care about anything in Africa. Sometimes I reply telling them how un-virtuous their mother is using less-than-nice words. One of the spammers was REALLY upset with my reply. |
