If you get an email from sborock@cbcscomicis.com DO NOT OPEN IT!!!! It did NOT come from Steve Borock at CBCS. The real Steve's email address has CBCS capitalized. CBCS is vigorously looking into this. It could be a virus. It could just be a bad joke. But they are suggesting that NO ONE opens the email!!! edit: this is what I got: |

Yeah, it looks like it sent it to everyone in his address book. Which could technically be half of the United States and Canada.

we've had a similar issue at my university of people "pretending" to be department chairs and sending messages from seemingly legit looking e-mails to department faculty.

Luckily I didn't get a spoofed e-mail. @SteveRicketts does this mean CBCS was hacked and if so was any of our credit card information on file put at risk? Thanks for being forthright.

@OGJackster I'm currently chatting online with a CBCS employee. All credit card and personal information should be safe. It appears that only someone's email addresses were accessed. When they have more info, they will share ASAP. From what I am gathering, CBCS itself was not hacked. |

CBCS was not hacked. Borock's email address book was stolen by some type of email malware.

On a total side note, domain names are NOT case sensitive. If your email application happens to display the email addresses in all lower case, that is still legit. So, if I were to get an email from sborock@CBCScomics.com it is the exact same as coming from sborock@cbcscomics.com and this difference alone would not be cause for alarm normally.

This is the new thing. At work here scammers sends emails pretending to be the CEO or president. It's kind of stupid when you think about it though. Why would the head of the company be emailing a peon like me? We actually followed through a bit and the scammer asked if said person could go to Walmart and purchase a bunch of giftcards. Then to save time just scratch the codes and email them. Riiiiight... |

I got an email that said GOT YOU! It had a password I used for some sites and claimed it had installed a virus and videoed me watching porn and would disseminate to all my email contacts unless I send $1900 Bitcoin! I checked the 'you've been pwned' site and indeed I had bee pwned. But I hardly think someone who busted into some site like jetpens and got my email addy and jetpens PW could do everything he claimed so I just LOL'd the whole matter. |

Yeah, I got this too. Was suspicious so opened it on a Chromebook. Chromebooks are largely immune to viruses and malware and should you somehow get one Chromebooks are ridiculously easy to reset. Once I opened it was obvious something not right. The only reason I even opened it at all is that everything I checked indicated WeTransfer was a legitimate service. But anyway I emailed Steve to let him know maybe his email had been hacked and then I got his "on vacation" auto reply. Proof #2 something amiss. Thanks Jesse for posting up here. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Bronte I have an email account that I only use for suspicious sites. There was evidently a comic related website that collected a lot of emails from comic fans and industry employees. Can't remember the site name, but I remember thinking "I don't trust this site." I even remember doing a domain name search and IP address query. At some point I determined it was a marketing company just collecting a list of email addresses to spam. I abandoned using the site. That email address ended up on a spam list along with hundreds of other comic collectors. I knew they'd captured passwords too. I assume they used a proxy site that captured all the data the user entered when they left the site. Either way, I had already changed the password and I rarely ever use it for anything. Earlier this year, hackers and generally evil people compiled a lot of the separate lists that had been collected over the past decade or so and compiled them into one big comprehensive list. They posted the list on sites like pastebin.com . It's a site where people share computer code and things that can be used for shady activities. You might see home addresses for all the top govt. officials on there one day or a list of North Korean IP addresses the next. I actually surfed a North Korean website once to see what kind of anti-American propaganda was there. It was different. I get spam at that one email address. If they write offering me an inheritance or wanting to start a business, I usually tell them I'm rich and I don't need their African money. I tell them Americans don't need or care about anything in Africa. Sometimes I reply telling them how un-virtuous their mother is using less-than-nice words. One of the spammers was REALLY upset with my reply. |
