Marvel Value Stamp grading question9222

Collector NightRelic private msg quote post Address this user
I have a copy of Incredible Hulk 180 I got when it came out. Back then, I removed the Marvel Value Stamps. I still have all the stamps, though. I recently put all the stamps back with their books. So, I have the Hulk 180 and its stamp. I'm wondering how CBCS would handle something like this as far as the grade and slabbing it? What would I do in sending it to them to make sure they stayed together? Hoping to get an actual CBCS definitive answer on this, if possible.

Curious question indeed.

I have no idea what they will say, but my 1 cent thought would be that I dont think that having it hang separately during submission is a viable option.

I can't imagine them taping the stamp to the book, because they arent going to enhance or degrade a book. I'd imagine they would leave that to you. Maybe if you taped it it would just be considered a tear?

Granted, this is only my thoughts. I have no idea, but I'm definitely curious what they say.

If my comments equate to witless prattle, consider it a free bump in thread.

=)

I doubt CBCS would slab the loose piece with the book since it would be free to move around within the slab. You could tape it in as @Bronte mentioned. Tape is only allowed up to a 7, per their grading guidelines.

I see you’ve asked this before and got a lot of opinions but no chime in from Ricketts or other CBCS personnel. Maybe they’ll see it this time, but I would also recommend emailing customer service at customerservice@cbcscomics.com

First off, I'm impressed that you were able to keep all your old comics AND the stamps for so many years!!!! KUDOS!!!

Secondly, I'm assuming that you either have or will tape them back in. Here are the CBCS grading guidelines concerning tape. Now, would it be considered a small or a larger amount??? I don't know. I'm thinking that since it is applied to an interior page, that they would go easy on it, but that is just my opinion.

This comic is definitely a read copy with handling wear, but can still be a very desirable copy.

This could have one major defect like a larger piece out of the cover, a long tear or a detached centerfold.
It has stress lines on the spine and creases from the opening and closing of the cover.
This could have a light reading or subscription crease or a rolled spine, but is not damaged enough to reduce eye appeal dramatically.
Some cover discoloration, fading in colors and soiling is allowed.
The cover and/or inside pages could have some tears and/or folds.
With the absence of many other defects, the cover can be detached from one staple, but cover cannot be completely detached from interior.
Books with slightly brittle pages cannot grade higher than 6.5 and generally are even lower in grade.
Pages and inside covers could be brownish but not brittle.
Depending on the look of the comic, very small amounts of tape could be acceptable in this grade.
VERY GOOD 5.0 TO 3.5
5.0 VERY-GOOD / FINE

4.5 VERY-GOOD+

4.0 VERY-GOOD

3.5 VERY-GOOD–

These books are complete, but can have major creases and a spine roll.

Cover gloss can be very low or sometimes no gloss at all.
The inside paper quality can be low and small pieces of the pages may be missing.
Books with brittle pages cannot grade higher than 3.5 and generally are even lower in grade.
Books in this grade are almost always creased, scuffed, abraded and soiled, but readable.
A larger amount of tape is also allowed in this grade. (once again, CBCS does not recommend placing tape on a comic)

I agree with Jesse O. Tape it in, and take your punishment

Don't use glue or tape... Get some hard candy, put it in your mouth, get on latex gloves and insert your index finger in your mouth with the hard candy mixed with your saliva. Now use this solution to put the stamp back into the book.

I'm kidding... use tape.

Thanks for all the suggestions. No, I haven't taped any of the stamps back in. I've had thoughts of trying a mixture of glue and page shavings from a book of the same period to reinsert. I would try it on a cheaper book first, to make sure it works. I would use archival book glue. The candy idea is interesting. I'd be worried about the stickiness. I have to admit, I absolutely despise tape on a book. As far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't grade a book over VG if it has tape on it. I just sold one where I did that. I think CBCS might have graded it as high as 7.0, given what this says, but I don't agree. Tape, while it may be an effort to hold a book together, also causes more damage with age as the tape dries up and chemicals leach into the paper. Just my opinion. I know professional graders disagree with me, but I've been doing this for 35 years. That's how I'll grade them, sell them and probably avoid buying them like the plague. Except maybe something like a Golden Age Batman I'm paying VG prices for I think might grade out higher than I would grade it.

@NightRelic ok, getting serious here. Get archival glue, water it down, get very thin Rice paper. Cut in small strips (like tape size) & get a small art paint brush and apply the watered down archival glue over the small pieces of rice paper. Make sure the rice paper covers both the comic page and the stamp. Allow to dry, repeat other side of page. Viola !

@GanaSoth Would that qualify as amateur restoration?

@dielinfinite hum... I don't know for sure. Maybe tape is the only way? Even though that should be considered amateur restoration as well, if he's adding back in of pieces missing.

Rice paper and paste will get a restored note. Tape is counted as a defect and counts toward the grade, but not nearly as much as a missing stamp. More and larger pieces of tape would count off more on the grade...so logically one small piece of tape would be the least damaging to the grade.

That said, I'm not going to tell you to tape it back into the book...
