Grail time today! A damaged grail but grail nonetheless….. Boy what a treat for my geeky DC freaks. Today you get to see the intimate parts of a Mi Gran Aventura: "La Criatura Del Pantano"(Mexican Swamp Thing #1)! This book was published on October of 1975 by Novaro in the Series Avestruz format. Now this format was about as tall as a American comic book but half an inch shorter on the right side. Weird uh? Yes this book is in a taller format then what we are used to as Americans. We think this format was created in order for Novaro to save on paper costs. It does create a situation where the original panels now have to be shrunk on the long side which makes a bit of space up on top. This format issue doesn't detract from the art but is noticeable. Also, it must be mentioned how hard it is to source one of these.... Key DC Novaros can be very tough to find so anytime you see one ya gotta take notice.![]() ![]() ![]() Now this specific book was pulled from a bind and sold to me loose. I had been hoping the spine had somehow remained damaged but a bit intact. When it arrived though I realized it was completely loose leafed. The book has been trimmed on all four sides to accommodate the binding process. Now, yes this book is severely altered. But, all that being said the binding process was a sort of time capsule for this issue. The binding made sure this books color strike/paper quality survived the years in absolutely pristine off the press condition! People forget that collectors in other countries sought to preserve their books in a collector culture that didn't have bags and boards. Here in the states we were spoiled with bags and boards very early on in the hobby. Bags and boards were easily accessible. Other collectors outside the US had alot more difficulty finding comic supplies depending on country. For them the easiest way to preserve these books for posterity was binding them into books. Though expensive many collectors sought this technique out. It horrifies us today but it is what it is. So the horrific trimming issue dealt with lets delve into this editions amazing qualities shall we? The classic Wrightson cover is absolutely without fault print quality wise. The interior art also is well handled by Novaro for sure. In fact id say the contrast between color appears a bit better on the Mexican edition. Maybe the paper was better quality and held the ink better? Alec Hollands date with fate is pretty darn sweet. And the classic Bernie Wrightson art jumps off the page! I am telling ya Novaros printing quality is pretty amazing. I am very impressed when it is compared to the American printing. I will include some compare and contrast to the art below….. ![]() ![]() All in all this book is stunning despite its flaws. I am not a grade snob. I am a enthusiast…. LOL Enjoy..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
