So just for fun I was looking over the hot comics on GoCollect and noticed I have 58 to 60 of the top 100 popular Modern books and 51 of the top 100 Bronze , and sadly only 5 of the top 100 silver ![]() My question is...when to slab? when do you slab?? I so far have basically only used it for Witnessed signatures or for doubles with the intent to sell the lower graded book. Some of these books I can't believe the "values" especially since most of the modern I got off the rack and I've been picking up Bronze age since I was in my late teens/early twenties for much, much less than what the say they are worth now. Starting to think of grading a select few just to guard against future damage....although they are pretty safe in a box on a shelf!! |

I probably slab stuff that shouldn't be slabbed so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I think the first books to be slabbed are the ones you want to slab. Meaning, the books that have personal or sentimental value. Preserving books that are that represent that part of your history I'm sure any book in that pile would be hard to err. The second in my opinion, would be books of value monetarily. I think if you add the cost of slabbing and cost of acquiring the book and after selling could still make a small profit it is worth considering. As for the box in a shelf theory, accidents happen. Pets, little kids, etc could ruin your day / collection. I am a huge klutz. I killed the value of an amazing 6. Its far harder to damage something slabbed. Anyways, that's my 2 cents. |

I personally slab only when I'm going to sell a book. At my very base core inside, I remain not a believer in slabbing comics, but I am also wise enough to realize that I am in the minority and that this is what folks want. So if one wants a bridge, I will sell that bridge. If one wants slabbed books and I can make a mint off it; then that's what I will sell. I keep my books that I love raw with no intent on selling |

@KatKomics The last 5 that I sent in, 3 I plan to sell and the other 2 I hang onto. I am going to try to keep that format and send books in that I feel will come back worth a minimum of $100 or more per book. I also like to send books in that I have multiples of. For example, I have 6 Nova #1 volume 1 books. 2 are being graded now. I will keep the better of the 2 and the other one I plan to sell. Some of the profit will be used to pay for more books to get slabbed. Hopefully this cycle will continue for awhile.

Ive fallen into a pattern where I submit on my own 2x a year at Big Apple and then at Rhode Island, usually I put in a couple of older signed books for red labels and whatever Im getting signed at the con. I actually submitted for my first ever blue labels this year (they just went to grading on Friday!) and I honestly spent months picking which ones. I went with my Rick and Morty vs Dungeons & Dragons NYCC foil and this absolutely GORGEOUS copy of Phantom Stranger #25 that I picked up for my bondage cover collection. Im planning on eventually slabbing all of my bondage covers, but aside from those I think Im generally going to stick to signed books for slabbing.![]() ![]() If I have something that I specifically want to sell (super rare!) I send to CGC but for my PC I always use CBCS (except that time the facilitator accidentally sent my order to CGC ![]() I also dont really care about the grade, Im more interested in the preservation/authentication that slabbing offers but thats probably because I don't usually sell anything. |

I find the wells in most comic wall displays to be a great way to ruin a raw book. Also, signatures. I have some books that are essentially worthless, but I got them signed by a couple of people and I use slabbing as "proof" the sigs are valid. I have nearly 500 signed comics and only 30 or so are sig verified. I try to get at least one verified from each person I enjoy speaking with at cons or sentimental books. Ultimately, the sig verification only matters if I sell. Not that I'm that old, but if something happens to me it makes it easier for my wife to offload comics without having to think about it as much. My collection isn't worth all that much, but it'd pay for funeral and burial leaving the life insurance for bills. You never know when some drunk/texting/idiot is going to plow into your car (as happened to me a couple years ago and took 18 months of physical therapy to get back to 100%). |

I'm all about the short box. That's how they get displayed. As for my slabbing habits: -upper mid grade & higher SA keys -valuable keys -books I intend to sell to give the buyers peace of mind For my PC: -IDW Transformers retailer incentive variants for the mini series. -SA X-Men key issues, and high grade bronze/copper/modern X-Men keys and issues that hold significance for me. -upper mid to high grade SA and high grade BA/CA Marvel first appearances or classic stories. -Might start slabbing some of my higher grade pence keys. I'll have to go through them. |

I’m with @kaptainmyke. My signatures on comics. I like peace of mind that no one can question the validity of the signatures. I also like to get them done with covers that I like or the older comics I have that may be worth something. Or comics that are valuable to me. |

I have a scan of my Giant Size X Men #1 as my screen saver on my laptop. I could rotate that with other comic books that are my favorites in my collection and I might start doing that soon. Look out laptop, here comes Devil Dinosaur #1 next. I love that blue cover. That way I still get to see it them everyday.

I'm relatively new to the slabbing phenomenon, I just like how the books look in the plastic holders with the relevant info on the labels. So far I've only slabbed some personal favourites and minor key issues, Superman 199, 233, silver age Teen Titans 1, Showcase 55, All Star Comics 58, Brave and the Bold 85 and Batman Adventures 12. I was interested in getting some books signed but I've kind of lost interest in that aspect of collecting.

I slab my keys for future sale, slabs seem to sell easily. I always send in a few high grade non keys to sell to pay for the next round, and to chase the 9.8, test my eye. And I slab covers that are deserving of going on my wall, coffin liners.
