What Causes This to Happen, Redux?8936

Collector Drogio private msg quote post Address this user
My original thread was archieved, but I'm back again with a PSA.

Whatever Marvel Comics is choosing for their darker/richer inks sucks. Here is a comic that is barely a week old. Look at the ink transfer to the board. Rendering a 9.8 potential into the 9.4 range within a week's storage.

For shame, Marvel.

I am in the process of going back through some of my more recent Marvel books and double bagging because of this problem (bag over comic, then bag/board the bagged comic.

I think other comics have this issue, but not nearly as bad as Marvel comics.

Watch out, True Believers...it'll happen to you too!

That sucks. Thanks for the heads up.

Either it's the ink, or the acidity levels are so high in your system, you could be a green dragon. Haha

I don't think it's just Marvel. I think some of the IDW books do it as well.

Yup .. my immortal hulk 2 suffered this fate

Just switched out my immortal hulks...they all have this to some degree. The lighter inks (green, blue, yellow) seem to not be bad... red, purple and black seem to be the worst.

Also, I’ll say that I have not witnessed this on any of my comics supported by the Gerber full backs. Not sure why that is. Could it be the gloss of he BCW backing boards just create a more adhesive surface? The acidity levels?

Anyway, on to my venom books.

@Drogio that's good to know. I use nothing but Mylites2 and Fullbacks for my comics.

I'd ask that you check a few recent marvel comics to verify this. I have never witnessed it, which seems odd and makes me think maybe the board might be part of the problem. Not sure I'd the "gloss" of the board, maybe combined with the slipperiness of the bag, is allowing the comic to move freely in the Bag and thus rub against the board. I've read some things about "marvel rubbing" which says that this color loss may be due to the comic moving round in the bag against the board . The geber mylites have that film which seems to help with keeping the comic from moving around.

@Drogio when I get home today, I will check out my comics for ya. Make sure that the same thing isn't happening on mine.
I'll post the results.

@Drogio Just checked my Immortal Hulk comics that are safely snuggled in their Mylites2 & Fullbacks. Removed them, no ink residue left on the boards or any noticeable ink rubbings on the comic's.

On your BCW boards, you noticed some ink residue left behind as indicated in your pics. I'd say it must be a board / humidity issue.

I also store my comics with small bags of desiccants in their boxes.

and here, i don't care a whit between a 9.8 and 9.4 and 9.2. i store my books for my enjoyment and not to be later Slabbed. i don't trust/believe anyone who claims a raw grade above 9.4, anyway.

I do the same (desiccants). But I’m not sure how effective they are.

Then humidity is out. I'm guessing it's the kinda backboard that was used? Unless it's just cheap ink used.

My Immortal Hulk 2 has this issue too. Like most, I mentioned it in that thread. Real shame that Marvel can't get their qc right. You got independent comics using better paper and printing techniques. It is a shame.

I got thanos 1 yesterday. Immediately put it a bag and board then no more than two hours later pulled it out and had run all over the board from the ink coming off.

@bige31 can you tell us the brand of backing boards you used?

We are trying to determine the root cause through trials/observations.

So far the E.Gerber Fullbacks don't cause the rubbing issues. Could be the ridged micro grooves in the boards that deters it.

Here is an up close pic of a Fullback. Almost a canvas type of feature.

@bige31 ah ha. Now we're getting somewhere. Both you and @Drogio were using BCW, probably because the Comic Shop uses them for their sale items.

@Studley_Dudley I know you said that your entire PC was getting the Mylites2 & Fullback upgrade treatment. Can you tell us what backing board you previously used that gave you the rubbing results you got on your IDW books?

@Wraith can you tell us about your Immortal Hulk #2 previous backing board?

@GanaSoth I also think it wasn’t the gloss side or full gloss. It was just the regular board.

Just finished switching out my recent marvels. The majority of them didn’t have severe (let’s call it) “marvel rubbing”...but definitely just about all issues had very slight color transfer. I switched them all to double bags regardless.

Will go through my recent DC comics another time, maybe later this week and see what’s going on.

The gloss vs non gloss side of the board may be an interesting experiment...

Worst Marvel Rubbing I’ve seen yet for a new book. These actually took a ride from NYC, all the way to California then back to CT...plenty of jostling and shaking to make sure as much ink rubs off onto the board as possible.
