ASM 299/300 and 360/361 are other examples, but ASM 300 & 361 aren't quite Hulk 181, with 300 being even less so because Venom doesn't appear on the cover. Now if someday 300 & 361 skyrocket out of reach the way Hulk 181 has, I think many people will gravitate toward 299 & 360 the way they are Hulk 180. Or; if everyone suddenly feels the first named appearance of any size in a comic book story is the 1st appearance, whether the next full appearance or 1st cover appearance is more desirable[valuable] or not. |

It doesn't. It's perceived value.

Low print runs build hype. Demand makes the value spike. People take notice and a brand new character and get tons of attention and interest. The character gets an option for movie or TV show and a star is born. |

That seems to be the recipe and the plan to follow. Whoever is better at it becomes the richest. And the battle of the king makers continues and I love it! |

Thanos was done so well that I believe he will maintain his popularity. Definitely the best marvel villain to date.

Darkseid..oops I mean Thanos is a decent villian despite being pretty much a Marvel version of Darkseid

Granted, I haven't read a lot of recent Marvel books. I was around for the first Infinity Gauntlet series and (much like Darkseid) Thanos just seemed to be the cosmic villain that they pull out when Galactus was overkill and they didn't want the overhead of the whole Kree/Skrull thing. I understand that he's gained some popularity in recent years, I guess the point I was trying to make was that I don't think he's popular enough on his own to maintain anywhere close to the price levels his first appearance reached with the hype of the movies. Not saying that IM 55 will be worthless or anything. But I'm wrong about most things, soooo..... |

Iron Man #55 is more than just the first appearance of Thanos. Of all the comics I bought that year, my copy off IM #55 was read the most. It was falling apart. I upgraded in the 90's thankfully. I thought this thread was for new comics coming out. |

I took “predictions or potential hot books” to mean I could predict the death of hotness. For me, I am happy to sell when something has peaked. Who knows about Thanos, but certain things do drop in value. Like Ultron. “Buy low, sell high” I do have a pile of Jimmy Olsen 134’s. If I was predicting new books, I would fail, miserably, for sure |
