Some LCS’s put stickers on the covers of FCBD books, does this effect the value? If so, is there any way to remove them?

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. | drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

In all fairness, the whole point of FCBD isn't to give out comics to collectors. It's to get people who aren't reading comics already interested in them.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. | xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
The sticker takes what had been a free comic (hence the F) and turns it into a priceless reminder of the fun you had at your comic shop.

The comic shops have to pay for the books, so I understand them wanting to use them as advertising. The only "free" thing about them is that the customer doesn't have to pay anything for them. The comics are not actually free.

Thanks so much for your help guys, probably should’ve posted this before I bought an Umbrella Academy #0 FCBD. Oh well, thanks again!

For years FCBD was a dash and grab one of everything. Also, though, how much are these worth even without the LCS stamp? At one point these were new comics with original stories, typically setting the stage for some sort of "event" and even had first appearances on occasion (Simon Baz), but now they seem to be largely reprints or small press books in very high print quantities. |

It is just frustrating that people who know full well what a sticker does to the possibility of the comic having any value at all as a collectible would do it anyway. |

@drchaos The point isn't to create collectibles, it's to expand readership.

A few things about FCBD - 1) It is voluntary. Your LCS is not required to partake in it. 2) The comics have to be purchased by your LCS. They do not get them for free. 3) The whole idea behind FCBD is to get new people interested in comics and gain customers and to give existing customers a chance to see what a different title is all about. Both of these will hopefully result in increased sales. It is a promotional event and the FCBD comics are promotional items. 4) The first time customers, theoretically, have seldom, if ever, bought a comic in a comic book store before. Putting the store name and information on a promotional item is just good business practice. 5) As Tim pointed out, these comics aren't meant as collectibles. If "Umbrella Academy" had not been made into a series, few people would be giving that comic a second thought. And who knows, maybe it was a FCBD copy that caught a producers eye and led to its' development. Maybe it even had a sticker on it. In short, if you are lucky enough to live near a comic book store AND that store decides to participate in FCBD, don't get bent out of shape if they decide to put their name on something that they are giving you. Enjoy the free gift, read it and maybe even pass it along to someone else. Maybe to someone who is interested in comics but has never read one. Share the joy of comics!!!! |

Yeah...I think when we start complaining about the condition of free things we're losing sight of the original intent of FCBD. Our hobby needs new buyers and FCBD is trying to bring new readers in. Sure it's great if an Umbrella Academy book ends up being valuable some day...but I never expect mint books...or valuable books. I usually just read them once and dont even bag and board...or I give them to my students at school. I have some shops in area that don't even participate anymore because of the cost. Can't beat free sh*t

I completely understand why they do it and I definitely don’t fault them for doing so. I was curious in this specific scenario, that’s all. Thanks again for all of your help!

Instead of stickers, I see stamps being used by most of the LCS. I grab the comics as a secondary concern as at least one of the shops (and usually several) invite creators and do signing as part of FCBD. That's what I go for.
