Captain Marvel - with SPOILERS8541

Seeing it alone or with a male buddy, I would have given it a “meh”.

Seeing it with wife and three daughters, coupled with that we grew up in the time period the movie is set in... well then it was great. This is a girls movie, and a good one at that.

I saw it today because I'm cheap lol.

I liked it better than Justice League, but that isn't saying a whole lot considering what I thought of Justice League. Still, I was entertained enough to watch it again when it comes to dvd and my wife undoubtedly gets it for me.*

I don't expect these films to follow anything familiar to me anymore, so the inevitable changes they make "for the better" won't bother as much. Enough still to use quotation marks when referring to said changes, however lol.

Goos was a good comic relief, and I'm glad to see the Skrulls. I thought Talos was a good character, but his accent and humor was distracting for a character from another planet. Too Terran.

*Iron Man 3 is the only film from this series I specifically requested she NOT purchase.

Although I agree with everything you said in that post, the portion I quoted sums up the majority of what I thought about when leaving the theater.

My concern is that high ticket sales cannot be equated with a movie actually being good. No one walking through the door the first time knows whether they will like or not. High ticket sales simply show that the advanced teasers were acceptable and that Marvel Studios has a reputation for producing good movies.

Start putting fat Thor on the screen more and that perception can change very quickly.

There seems to be a large portion of forum members who missed the part where Danvers lost her memory and spent years in a militaristic society that constantly told her to repress her emotions. And maybe expect women to just smile and look pretty all the time.

Bad logic there.....high ticket sales can also be the result of return viewers who bring in others to see the movie with them....just because they walk through the door doesn't mean for the first time and in fact people that like movies often go more than once to see them and take others with them ..I know some movies develop cult followings and are viewed repeatedly by more hard core fans but even myself...I plan to see Endgame a second time tomorrow and take a friend with me...suppose she likes the movie and does the same...so yes ticket sales can directly reflect if a movie is good or bad.

I got that and didn't care. The movie was boring. I think she looks dumpy and pigeon-toed. Maria Rambeau in the movie was a stand out acting performance and I'm not attracted to her either.

I don't understand why people here stand on some high ground like they have uncanny insight into women and the sexist oppression they encounter in the world. Is there some kind of "Me Three" movement going on here at this message board?

I stated a fact. No one walking into the theater the first time has any idea whether they will walk out liking it or not. It's completely irrelevant whether they tagged along with someone else or not. There is no 1:1 correlation that ticket sales meant people liked the movie.

Blair Witch is prime example of a crappy movie selling a lot of tickets. I don't recall Blair Witch II doing very well.

a we three movement is not essential to spot the issue. When someone insists on describing a woman as dumpy or pidgeon toed...in essence attacking someone for their appearance why would a me three movrment even bother? When basic respect or courtesy fails why look deeper?

okay let's fix this for you. This is what you said. "that high ticket sales cannot be equated with a movie actually being good. No one walking through the door the first time knows whether they will like or not. High ticket sales simply show that the advanced teasers were acceptable and that Marvel Studios has a reputation for producing good movies. "

That is non factual and incorrect. It makes the assumption sales are driven by first time viewers I saw the movie. Then I saw it again. So half what I spent was because I LIKED THE MOVIE. I would not have spent the money to see it again otherwise. Next weekend I will take mom stepdad and little brother and the movie gets forty more in sales because....I LIKED THE MOVIE. When some people consider s movie they may or may not go see it depending on a given critics review If they choose to go see it that suggests the critic left a good review because...why yes ..HE LIKED THE MOVIE. All of this is direct correlation between enjoying s movie and sales For sales there need not be a one to one correlation..a fault in your logic. As long as people enjoy the movie and return or bring still others that is enjoyment of that movie directly pushing sales. Conversely said no person who ever hated a movie..let's take five people and go see it again this Sunday....

I didn't particularly care for her as CM. I'm not sure what it is. I loved the supporting cast, and thought they were great. Maybe it is the lack of emotion, or that the character was made more powerful than the Hulk, Superman, and Jesus Christ combined. I can say I didn't like her appearance in Endgame. It just came across as smug. It could be the way the role is written, so I'm thinking future installments with her will help round out the character more.

Didn't hate Captain Marvel. Kind of entertaining, but largely boring. Any levity seemed very forced and completely broke the flow of the plot, which was already clunky. Larsen came across as flat in her performance, i didn't like Fury in this movie but the supporting female cast was pretty dynamic. I thought the plot was really poorly executed, particularly in the loooong slow portions of the movie; it was like a video game. We're going to meander you through this side-quests because we needed more content. It was pretty cool, visually, but in this day and age just making a visually impressive movie doesn't cut it. Of course, this could be a director issue, an editing issue etc... Thinking back, there was basically no growth in the main character. She found out she'd been lied to; manipulated, had her life stolen. But, there was almost no reaction to that; no personal growth. Granted, she went from wanting to kill a bunch of people to wanting to help them, but the switch just happened, with no sort of real introspection or self-evaluation. It's definitely down on my list of Marvel movies (better than Iron Man 3, which was just a reason to show a bunch of variation of the Iron Man suit), falling in with Dr. Strange, both Ant-Man movies, Thor, Avengers: ultron (well...better than Ultron)... Didn't hate them, didn't love them; still better than almost anything DC is putting out (except Wonder Woman, which was freaking fantastic.)
Not that it should matter what gender you are, but after the showing my wife said she was so bored she was thinking about leaving the theater to get her hair cut in the mall about halfway through as a "better use of her time". She hasn't had her hair cut in 18 months because she despises getting her hair cut. So, take that review for what it is as well.

My thoughts watching Brie Larson is she is young in the Marvel universe...her smug attitude reminds me of Tony Stark in the first few movies....she has six more pictures and a world of room to grow, and her attitude could be an intentional plot device for Marvel so she can get knocked down hard and learn some of those lessons.....by example remember Stark poking Banner with an electric prod? Or Stark commenting he had gone 11 of 12 with the Maxim cover models but one month had been twins so....yeah smug....arrogant...and Stark as a character is far less powerful than Danvers character is...me, I have a wait and see attitude. You guys may be right, but I think I will give her the chance and see

The way her character was portrayed, to me, was just smug to be smug. I think you may be on to something. Possibly start her off as nigh-invincible to have someone :cough: Nitro :cough: knock her down a couple levels in order to have her build herself back up to become the hero we need & deserve. But, yeah, agree that we need to step back and see where this is going. The mouse has a bold vision with the MCU, so I would think this is an intentional plot device as you said.

The movie was boring. You are entitled to like it. I respect your right to have a different opinion. I will not sit and converse with someone who incorrectly interprets what I say. I shall go wander off again and find more interesting conversation elsewhere online.

I actually never commented as to if I liked the movie or not..which somewhat indicates who is interpreting badly. Again. I demonstrated that sales can and are often affected by the quality of a movie contrary to your comment. Enjoy your other interesting endeavors and I hope you find them fullfilling

I assumed it was rather clear I was using a rhetorical example complete with rhetorical critics who also liked the movie as well...hence why in the example I labled it "the movie" rather than Captain Marvel....sorry for not stating it more clearly. I can see where it might confuse someone despite not calling the movie by its name.
If that is why he felt that I liked or had even offered an opinion of the movie I get it, but not sure it changes much .

Thanks for pointing it out to me though...and the chance to clarify
