Anyone else find this sale price a little strange? No movie or tv show or traveling circus to go off of. Just a CVA sticker.

I think this book has always been inexplicably expensive. For all intents and purposes Moon Knight is c-list character with no movie/tv exposure on the horizon....no idea why this book commands such high prices.

I wish I had that oil money to buy things. Some shop owners stated there could have been a low print run for WWBN 32, and one shop owner stated that a distributor in the area was a little prudish and wouldn't distribute any comics or magazines with what they saw as objectionable material. Thus, they would tear off the covers, hold until the return date, then send back.

These types of sales while seeming a tad outrageous are probably purely driven by love for the character. I know Moon Knight has a pretty faithful (smaller, but dedicated) following...and there's no way Disney touches this character, so it can't be speculation.

I've never understood why that issue consistently sells for so much. Even still, that's way too much for a 9.8. If there's been a recent bump I think it's optimistic speculation because like @Paulbg2000 said, he isn't really going to make it to Disney's PG-13 world.

@xkonk But the second paragraph in in the auction listing above clearly states that it's highly likely he'll be introduced to the MCU or get his own Netflix show.

Compared to this, the $59K someone dropped on a Hulk 181 last month seems reasonable.

I think Feige has mentioned MK is a possibility. It's most likely spec but its the only 9.8.

A friend of mine also told me Marvel Bronze horror like WWBN and Tomb of Dracula had low print runs b/c of content and sales.

Bu whoa 50K is definitely high spec w/ no announcements.

I recently found a book (possibly FF) that was an MJ variant. I'll have to try and find it again. I did run into a guy with an ASM 100 MJ variant. He sounded unsure of what he wanted to do with it.

Back on topic. It appears there are 18 9.8 copies in the CGC census with the highest pence copy at 9.4 (if you're into that sort of thing, which I am). It looks like the CVA sticker 9.8 was the only one for sale. I'm interested to see if this is an isolated incident or if it holds up. That sale is almost 8x what a 9.6 goes for.

If the guy works with Kevin Feige maybe he knows something the rest of us don't. But a) Marvel is cancelling all their Netflix shows in advance of the upcoming Disney streaming service, b) reports are that the Disney streaming service is going to be strictly PG-13, which isn't especially MK (or even Netflix Marvel) friendly, and c) obviously the Marvel movies are going to top out at PG-13, which again doesn't seem very MK friendly.

I'm not saying he'll never be on a screen somewhere, I'm just saying that it doesn't seem like a great fit and thus not an obvious choice.

Even still, the book always seems to sell at a good clip so it would be a decent investment. Gocollect has a 9.8 at higher than ASM 129, Giant X-Men 1, better than a Hulk 181 in 9.6. I would personally rather own multiple copies of any of those before Werewolf.

So, I have to ask this: Does a CVA sticker add value?

I think most dismiss them (I certainly do) but I wonder if this added to the frenzy over this copy?

As a rabid Moon Knight fan, I was watching this auction intently, for the first few days, I even had machinations of possibly shooting my shot which were quickly blown away LOL.

I was just as surprised as anyone else when the gavel fell!

The prices for this book seem to vary quite a bit. Just days before this auction ended you could still find 9.6's for around 5k if you got lucky. There have been "rumors" for a few years now about his possible appeal as a MCU or small-screen character. Kevin Feige is just the most recent one to name drop MK as a interest. I personally believe that eventually we will get to see him but there are many potential pitfalls to doing him justice on screen.

As for me I am holding onto my copies and if anyone is looking to sell theirs, dm me!

I doubt the CVA sticker has anything to do with the final sale price. I mean come on - any 9.8 is supposed to have superior appearance.

Moon Knight has never been a character that much appeals to me, personally. But the character does have a very loyal and enthusiastic fan base. And a lot of those fans believe Moon Knight will someday get a movie or TV spot.

But IMHO the REAL REASON for the record price is the book's rarity at this grade level. CGC has only graded 18 copies at 9.8. Compare that to other Bronze age keys like Hulk 181 (311) GS X-Men 1 (166) or even a book known to be hard to find in 9.8 - X-Men 94 (34) GPA hasn't recorded a 9.8 sale for over two years - and the nicest copy otherwise for sale right now is a signed 9.4.

So what is going on is that this was a RARE OPPORTUNITY that came along for the serious MK collector to own the best. If they didn't bid aggressively, there would not be another chance to acquire a WWBN 32 in 9.8 for years.

If history is any indicator, we'll likely see a few more of the 17 copies of WWBN graded 9.8 shake loose in the next year. I seriously doubt the owners of any of the other 17 copies have anything close to $50K invested - and taking a profit will be tempting. We also might see a few others reach that grade as anyone with a super nice copy will see this sale and be tempted to send it in for grading and encapsulation.

But ultimately - I'm confident WWBN 32 did not sell as well as the other keys mentioned above. So it's going to remain scarce in the better than NM grades.
