I could have sworn that FF 48 was the desirable and more valued book compared to FF 49. This appears to not be the case anymore.

Am I wrong in saying FF 48 used to be the more desirable/valued book? When did FF 49 usurp FF 48 as the Galactus/Silver Surfer book of choice?

I would not think that FF #49 would ever overtake FF #48, because issue 48 is the first full appearance of the Silver Surfer and a last page cameo of Galactus. From what I know, and from what I've seen recently, FF #48 is the more sought after and pricier book.

That's not to say that FF #49 has not shot up in price as well! It has gained a lot of traction and has a cooler cover (with the first cover appearance of both Silver Surfer and Galactus).

GPA still shows FF48 worth more than FF49 in like grades. Both are pretty pricey, though.

Where did you see FF48 as more sought after or more expensive?

OK, my apologies...it looks like at the 9.6 grade or higher the FF 49 pulls away from FF 48 but below that grade FF 48 is valued higher...weird actually.

Those are huge $$ differences in the 9.6 and 9.8 where FF49 is more than 48....why is that?

What are you checking this on? ComicsPriceGuide? Sites like that are not very reliable, unfortunately. I just check the eBay sold listings to see what people are willing to pay, myself.

I have no idea how they reached those numbers. Like I said, the most reliable source is to see what people are actually paying, so something like eBay shows what people bid for books on in the auctions they hold. Those sales prices are more reliable than something a website tries to dictate, in my opinion.

Go Collect data is actual sales data from eBay, Comiclink and Heritage Auctions (I believe) of CGC graded comics.

GPA shows FF48 higher than FF49 in both 9.4 and 9.2.

For both 9.8 and 9.6, FF49 is shown higher, but that fact may be misleading. For the 9.8, GPA shows a single sale of FF49 at $47,600... in 2016. For FF48, three sales are reported in the last 12 months for an average of $32,344. So, in this case, the 9.8 FF49 sale appears to be a price well above the perceived value of the comic.

For the 9.6, again only a single sale of FF49 is reported by GPA ($13K+ in late 2018) but two sales over the last 12 months for FF48 with an average price of $10,375.

Interesting. Personally, I just don't trust that information. I feel like it has to be inaccurate in some way. I've never heard of a FF #49 selling for more than a FF #48 in a similar grade.

Example:

FF #49 CGC 9.2 - Sold for $3,068.00 plus $19.95 shipping.
Link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Marvel-Comics-Fantastic-Four-49-CGC-9-2-1st-Galactus-2nd-Silver-Surfer-Stan-Lee/302970316496?hash=item468a7026d0:g:n3wAAOSwV1Vb9Dhn

FF #48 CGC 8.5 SS Stan Lee - Sold for $4,272.00 plus $25.89 shipping.
Link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fantastic-Four-48-Cgc-8-5-Signed-By-Stan-Lee-First-Galactus-Silver-Surfer/202561148981?hash=item2f2995d835:g:FPsAAOSwSMxcNV5~

I suppose a website can claim whatever it would like, but until there is evidence everyone can see I would not rely on it.

Those top two grades are suspicious. The difference in values for the same grades are not even close...it has to be inaccurate.

I can't remember which other thread this was in recently but I'll make the same suggestion I made there: look at the modeler. The model is what spits out all those price numbers.

48: https://comics.gocollect.com/guide/comicValueModels/gcin/126360

49: https://comics.gocollect.com/guide/comicValueModels/gcin/126431

Like @DWeeB1967 said, there just aren't any sales of 9.6/9.8 FF49 for their model to really work on (ignoring sales, the census on the main page there says there's only one 9.8 and another 13 9.6s, versus 42 and 99 for FF48). So the model on FF49 makes the usual low-info assumption, which is a huge increase at the high end of the scale. It has more info on FF48 so the slope is less dramatic.

Broadly speaking, I don't necessarily see a conflict between saying that people mostly want FF48 more but they might go crazy for the single graded 9.8 FF49.

At one time it was. I think the reason, in part, 49 has seen a bump is because much like Hulk 181 and 180, once one is priced "out of reach", the other starts seeing some action. Which comic starts the process is always up to the Market (us); [The Cameo or Full App. (X-Men Ann 14 v X-Men 266, S.P.J.O 134 v Forever People 1, etc).

FF 48 was also a warehouse find book. There are over 4k graded copies with 40 in 9.8.

FF 49 has only 1,700 graded copies with one in 9.8. Being a black cover also makes it tough to find in 9.6+.

I was gonna say 49 may just be scarce in super high grade compared to 48.

Had no clue about the warehouse find. And that’s a staggering contrast in availability in the stats, @SteveRicketts shared.
