Conserved is less severe than restored, but both have been altered, which is a non-starter for many collectors.

To me conserved is doing something to a book to keep it from deteriorating further, where restored is doing something to a book to make it appear nicer or attempt to improve the grade

restored, qualified1, qualified2, qualified3, conserved.... what's next to make people feel better about their book when significant amounts of cash is in play? I'm sure we can come up with another

Yes it does...while you are removing the frayed edges, the purpose of the trim is to improve the appearance of the book. I suppose an argument can be made that trimming may reduce further damage thereby falling into the Conservation category but I think most would disagree with that.
