Hello everyone,

I have had a difficult time finding a way to scan my graded comics. I finally purchased a new printer/scanner with an A3 size flatbed (plenty big), but the images come out blurry. The scanner is fine on raw books, so I presume the casing is causing the issue. Do you all have any suggestions? There are some great scans on eBay and my cellphone pictures just don’t cut it.

Thank you!

Modern scanners use a scanning technology that does not produce good results. "Some" older scanners use a different scanning technology that does produce good results.

Other people would be better at describing the differences.

there are different scanning techniques. I use my Microtek scanner to scan slabs and Original Comic Book art which uses I think CCD Kodak technology which permits things to be slightly above scanner crystal height without distorting the image. Let me look up an article and I'll post it so you can read more about it.

@jgzachary13 It may be worth it to check out your local library and see what kind equipment they have available. The ones near me have those large, office-style Xerox machines that scan slabs pretty well. In my area you just have to pay $1 to get a copy card that activates the machine but scans to a USB drive are otherwise free.

@SpiderTim and @dielinfinite Thank you both. I will check out the library option and search for a CCD scanner. Thank you for the guidance!

FTR, I've been using an HP Scanjet 8300 scanner for years. The larger sized CCD scanners are often referred to as legal document scanners. This is definitely the type of scanner you want for encapsulated books.

CCD tech is not nearly as fragile as described in the technical article on types of scanners. It can be fussy (experimentation with settings is often required before finding the optimum), but I think this is more propaganda from scanner manufacturers to promote a simpler device with fewer moving parts. The problem for collectors is that CIS tech sucks pond water when it comes to scanning comics in holders, ...period, end of story.

BTW, my HP scanner has been trouble free for years (knock on wood).

PS: A side note for Photobucket users (of which I'm one). Photobucket has apparently been futzing around with their editing functions by adding so-called improvements without notifying customers of changes. While I haven't noticed this impacting stored images, over the past six months or so I've noticed weaker, washed out images when new scans are moved from my computer to PB files.

My first thought was that it might be the scanner starting to fail, but upon further investigation I noticed a new setting in PB's COLOR editing control called "FADE" that actually produces a haze over scanned images in the middle +- pre-set mode. This should be toggled left, to the full minus position to retain image clarity for books in holders.

As for why the PB COLOR "FADE" feature was added to editing, I have no idea; your guess is as good as mine.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
I swear by my Epson GT-15000.

They are over $1,000 new but I was able to find mine used on ebay for $200 + shipping.

You may want to experiment with 3rd party scanning software. I used to work in the graphics field and the tech guys bought us an expensive new 11x17 scanner one year because the old scanner didn't work with the new computers. They knew nothing about buying a scanner for an art department, so it didn't work for what we used it for. We ended up buying 3rd party scanning software because it was a lot cheaper than buying a whole new 11x17 scanner. It took a lot of tweaking with the new software, but I finally got it running.

@jgzachary13 - I purchased my HP Scanjet 8300 through an auction on eBay around 4 years ago. When I set it up, I simply downloaded the free software from the HP site. I have played with the settings a bit, but still get some glare from the slabs. But overall I am quite satisfied with it.

I bought a used HP Scanjet 7400c on eBay for $40. Old and a little slow, but its a legal-sized CCD scanner and works great. The HP software for it is ancient, but I bought the Vuescan software and it works like heaven.

My scanner can do legal size and also 11" x 17" (it is big and heavy but I can scan magazines).

Here are a couple samples from the Espon GT-15000.

Your scans remind me that I did have to brighten the output of my scan because it was a little dark initially. Obviously, I couldn't do anything about the text being blurry.

This is the only other graded comic that I ever attempted to scan. It came out a little better.

I don't know if I still own this. I might have given it away to someone who did me a favor. I have a 9.8.
