Marvel doesn't accept Martina work, right?

Edit: wasn’t able to see the entire article before...but now that I can i see it’s mentioned.

I really wanted that grim knight Frankie’s comic cover, but not so much now...will likely dump some of his work now if it’s shown not to be original And purposely hidden.

With the number of covers he was pumping out for DC for the past several months I wouldn’t doubt there’s a lot more copy jobs...

Not happy to hear the extent of the accusations.

With that said, Mattina produces some amazing work.

Given all of the homages, stolen characters (deathstroke vs deadpool, etc.) it is very hard for me to take the rock throwing all that seriously.

hmmmmmm....copying other artists' poses or perspectives is not the crime of the century but this guy appears to be tracing or photoshopping others work right into his own....not good at all.

So what’s the protocol here? If one bases their work on another’s, do they ask for written or verbal, permission first? Are there artists that demand a fee or percentage of profits from others who use their work?

Is that how comics that are clearly homages work? Liefeld seems to get pissed at any cover that resembles his new mutants 98. So I assume no one is asking for his ok.

Can they even demand a fee for an homage? Can a pose or perspective be copywritten?

If I created an original character and I put my original character in this pose on the cover do I have to pay someone?

As long as the character has feet you do not have to pay Liefeld.

From what I understand, doing an homage or basing a piece on another artists work is ok as long as you give credit and do the drawing yourself. That is NOT what they are accusing Mattina of. He is basically tracing their work, probably by using a projector or a light box. In one of the two above articles, it is mentioned that he used a piece as an underpainting. Basically, that is painting the picture in one paint tone and then painting over that. In other words, they are saying that Mattina projects their piece unto a blank canvas, paints their picture all in shades of red (for instance) and then paints the new character over it changing very little. And one artist said his brushstrokes were still on the Mattina piece. If Mattina does his art digitally (I don't know if he does), that would be a very easy thing to leave behind. Then, you throw in the fact that he claims these as his own creations and doesn't give any credit to the original artist, and you can see why these guys get pissed. It is standard practice that you acknowledge the artist you are copying in your piece. Usually something like "after Kirby".

I know an artist that does pen and ink recreations of covers or pages. He uses a projector or a light box to get everything on the paper and then uses ink (with a pen, brush or quill) to finish it. He only does artwork from artists that have died and always marks the piece as "after ..." The reason he will not do a piece from a living creator is because he feels that they should have the right to use their artwork however they want. He does this for a living and his pieces are very sought after. He does incredible work!!!

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
Agreed with @JesseO. I've commissioned two drawings, both homages, and both artists wrote "after____" on it with the original creator's name. And that's even when they changed elements (like details of the pose) and created the art from scratch. Mattina is doing way more copying and giving way less credit. As for if it's illegal or frowned upon or whatever, it certainly seems like Mattina has done it enough that other artists are frowning on it.

The use of a light box is in and of itself not a bad thing. MANY artists use them. They can rework an old piece that they did, resize a portion of a current piece, use it to see how backgrounds look, etc. There are a thousand legitimate reasons for an artist to use a light box. But there is one major WRONG way to use it and that's to copy someone else's work that you are claiming is your own.

He wasn't stealing other peoples drawings though. Lots of artists use reference, what the guy the article is about is doing is called swiping. Some artists made an entire career of doing that (Rich Buckler and Rob Liefeld come to mind immediately).

can honestly say I was never a fan of his work.

On another note...I may have mentioned that my father was an artist (trained at an art school in the 60's run by Disney), as such for high school projects I knew about tricks and techniques I probably shouldn't have (late 80's here - pre internet in a small town, not even cable!) and that the high school art teacher wouldn't have suspected that I knew. Got a few 'A' marks thanks to projectors (usually scenery from photos we took) and rice paper!!
Good old dad taught me how to forge not just his but anyones signature to boot!!!
Just takes a little practice to get your hand to move smooth....

Probably not good enough to fool pro scrutiny but better than good enough to fool a teacher so I could get out of class!!!

Mattina was at NYCC a couple years ago at a dealers booth.
He was doing a few commissions for the weekend.

Went I kept going back to the booth, I noticed a Thanos he did for someone; and I have to say I was extremely unimpressed at the product that was produced. I don't want to go down this digital artwork vs. pencilled/inked artwork discussion for the millionth time, but I gotta say I would not purchase hand done artwork from him. The Thanos just didn't cut it for me whatsoever and was happy I didn't ask for an expensive commission. His digital artwork is impressive (albeit questionable based on this news); but hand drawn - nahhhh
