Last year I broke up with DirecTV after almost 20 years of service. After AT&T purchased them, what they could offer as incentives got locked down. But having AT&T cell phones, DSL, AND DirecTv (which I was paying them over $500 a month for in total)I thought for sure I could get some kind of deal. I even got flyers in my mailbox showing that I could get the exact service level that I had for $90 a month (if I was a new customer). After going back and forth (because I had to call each service separately), the best deal I got was that I could save $20 a month...IF I upgraded to the next tier on my cell phone plan which would cost me an extra $20 a month. So I dropped DirecTV and the AT&T DSL. Because of my distance to the switch, my DSL was maxed out at about 3 Mbs. I went with Comcast, got 150 Mbs and the cost was about the same per month.

My solution is not perfect, but I ended up with the same programming choices. Primarily, we went with PlayStation Vue. It has all the basic cable channels and they are adding more local channels. Currently, we have 2 of the local network affiliates on there. For the others, we use "rabbit ears". Their are different tiers of service, I added the top level package (got HBO and Showtime) and the sports pack. @Moodswing, the sports pack has all the regional Fox Sports, NBC & CBS Sports as well as ESPN, NFL RedZone, NFL Network, MLB TV, etc, etc. When it comes to sports, I actually have way more options than what I did with DirecTV. All for about $90 a month. I was paying DirecTV $160-$170 a month. And since I'm mostly a football fan, I can drop the sports package and save a little money when it's not football season.

We also have netflix and Amazon Prime. For the TV's that don't have the PlayStation hooked up to them, I got either a Roku or a Firestick. You can download the PS Vue app to stream TV in addition to the Netflix and Prime.

It's a bit more cumbersome switching from one app or another or having to go to the over air antenna, but at the end of the day, I'm saving money.

We cut TV a couple years ago, but then our internet provider (Comcast, no other options, sigh) offered a TV package on top for like $10. Since we can't even get local channels via antenna we picked it up and have some cable again. I think we pay maybe $100 a month, most of which is internet.

I'm paying about $60 a month for internet, but I had internet before I cut the cord, so cost wasn't really a factor. I work from home so I have to have it regardless of where we get our TV.

We cut the cord about 12 years ago. I miss live NHL but the benefits far outweighed the live sports.

I'm thinking that AT&T (DirecTV) and its $180 billion debt has a little to do with why they aren't giving any deals out.

Given that you would think with all the options out there that they would be more interested in retaining the customers they had rather than trading customers with comcast and dish at a deeply discounted rate. I wasn't looking for the new customer rate, but as a loyal and longtime customer I would have liked a small show of appreciation. So instead of making, say $150 off me for internet and satellite, they lost the full $210 a month. Seems like a smart business plan to me...Smh!

I may be watched 10 channels. I wish they had a package where you could just choose 10 channels and charge you just for those.

We had DirecTV both before and after the merger. It was much less time after because the change in customer service was ridiculously steep. DirecTV was maybe my favorite company before, and after they're just AT&T.
