| Last year I broke up with DirecTV after almost 20 years of service. After AT&T purchased them, what they could offer as incentives got locked down. But having AT&T cell phones, DSL, AND DirecTv (which I was paying them over $500 a month for in total)I thought for sure I could get some kind of deal. I even got flyers in my mailbox showing that I could get the exact service level that I had for $90 a month (if I was a new customer). After going back and forth (because I had to call each service separately), the best deal I got was that I could save $20 a month...IF I upgraded to the next tier on my cell phone plan which would cost me an extra $20 a month. So I dropped DirecTV and the AT&T DSL. Because of my distance to the switch, my DSL was maxed out at about 3 Mbs. I went with Comcast, got 150 Mbs and the cost was about the same per month. My solution is not perfect, but I ended up with the same programming choices. Primarily, we went with PlayStation Vue. It has all the basic cable channels and they are adding more local channels. Currently, we have 2 of the local network affiliates on there. For the others, we use "rabbit ears". Their are different tiers of service, I added the top level package (got HBO and Showtime) and the sports pack. @Moodswing, the sports pack has all the regional Fox Sports, NBC & CBS Sports as well as ESPN, NFL RedZone, NFL Network, MLB TV, etc, etc. When it comes to sports, I actually have way more options than what I did with DirecTV. All for about $90 a month. I was paying DirecTV $160-$170 a month. And since I'm mostly a football fan, I can drop the sports package and save a little money when it's not football season. We also have netflix and Amazon Prime. For the TV's that don't have the PlayStation hooked up to them, I got either a Roku or a Firestick. You can download the PS Vue app to stream TV in addition to the Netflix and Prime. It's a bit more cumbersome switching from one app or another or having to go to the over air antenna, but at the end of the day, I'm saving money. |
