I used to buy multiples for the purpose of keeping one and trading the other. There is still a sense of loss with that. I used a Defenders #1 in a trade for Strange Tales #110. I used to have 6 each on all the Miller Daredevil issues. I miss them, even though I know I got something better.

The only recent multiples I bought were 4 copies of THE NEW 52
DETECTIVE COMICS #1 off the shelf at BARNES & NOBLE when they
first came out (2011)...thought they might be of interest in
years to come.

People are so picky these days, I don't think I could find even one high grade copy at a book store. Nor do I trust the cashier ringing me up to handle it properly. I was screaming inside the last time I bought a comic at Books-a-Million. I tried to be polite as I asked her not to crease the spine of the comic, but she looked at me in a state of confusion and hurt. She had no understanding of what comic collectors expect.

I was lucky...I had a clerk that handled them with extreme care.

I've been collecting so long and looking at the same key issues on a dealer's display, that I get bored with a lot of them. In some cases I already own them. In other cases, the books are so common it's just a matter of how much I'm willing to spend. Show me a rare, scarce, or just very uncommon book that's interesting and I'll perk up.
Exactly why I collect high grade obscure esoteric golden age and silver age #1's, #nn's etc...tired of seeing the same key issues, or God forbid to I have to see another Schomburg or Schomburg-esque cover...I know I said it. Yes a great artist, but ugggg already. Lol

Supply & demand is the name of the game and always has been, but the hobby lost it's innocence over time, no single action being responsible for where we are today.

However, there's a deeper fear that haunts many collectors as values rise and fall remarkably fast and market trends veer ever closer to destabilization. A lot of folks buy multiples of books for a rainy day when that market is already saturated and the precursor of a climate changing drought.

It's just a symptom of how the hobby has changed from being a nerdy collector thing with minimal investment required to a portfolio market populated by three-piece suited accountants, tax attorneys and auction house brokers all of whom also want their piece of the pie.

The fear of being caught in a situation where selecting the right books becomes as critical as picking the right moment to sell takes a lot of the fun out of collecting. One decision might mean financial security, another, major investment losses. I say investment because the more books appreciate in value the less stable the market becomes for hobbiests.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, but he's riding the bubble too!

The worry brought on by skyrocketing prices of certain key issues and variants which force collectors to stretch their budgets is what motivates some collectors to get out of the hobby. Storage is also a factor. Add to that hot/cold pricing fueled by media interest and the result is perpetual volatility in the SA to Modern marketplace.

Knowing which books are the safest investments only makes the decisions tougher as personal tastes are far less of a factor in market fluctuation than media buzz and the supply/demand motivations mentioned earlier.

As depressing as all this sounds, I'm hopeful that the collector markets may stabilize somewhat in the new year ...outliers being perceived as what they are... overcoming the very real prospect of a correction on some level.

Cheers & best wishes,
CatMan America

Agree with this for the most part. OTOH, you can send all those "ugggg" Schomburg cover comics my way. I'll gladly take care of 'em fer ya!

Many people collected Tarzan’s, Disney’s, Harvey cartoons. Others went for horror, just a game of luck back then. So many (like me) watched the hobby, and decided to get in for the investment potential. However it turns out I like covers I find cool
My disappointments happen when I don’t win an auction for a cool cover that show up rarely, like a Susie 51 recently

None of this sounds like a hobby or collecting to me, certainly not the kind where you would miss something after you've sold it. Do day traders feel sad when they sell a stock? Do new hires call their friends to come check out their new 401k? Of course not. You're talking about businesses and investments, not a hobby.

I haven't sold many of my books but there was one I regretted. I got an Uncanny 101 fairly cheap at a garage sale, and later it was one of the first things I sent to CBCS. It came back a 3.5 and so a little later I figured that I could auction it, use the money to get some other Uncannys on my list, and fill it back in later fairly easily. It was not easy, and I felt pretty bad every time I missed out on a different 101. I finally replaced it a couple months ago.

My very first graded comic was NYX #3, and was graded a 9.8 by CGC. It was purchased on eBay and had a few QC issues that the company ignored. Instead of paying for shipping just so they can fix their mistake, and worried that it would have to be regraded, I sold it for a loss to an online comic shop. This is one of many things that I do not regret. Because they are decisions I can grow from, and items that I often felt are both smarter and more mature when I compare them to "fans" I tried tolerating on select fan-based forums and social media pages.

And yes... I tend to be salty. Which is why I regret when it comes to the amount of time I wasted tolerating their need to act like their opinion is the only one that matters. When I could have used it looking for a new publication that needs a freelance writer.

I rarely sell but due to storage issues I will likely try and offload some books in the next year. I still mainly buy to read so I end up buying things I like and don't get caught by speculation/bubbles too often...now what I like has changed over the years and some books may go up or stay low..doesn't bother me too much and if I'm lucky the market also decides they like my books!!

Ralph Snart - full run (i was 13?) - probably can't give them away!!
Dalgoda and Adnromeda - much better reads - also can't give them away (nor would I want to).
Teen Titans - full run 1964-1984 - never gonna leave my hands!!
Y-the Last Man full run - great read - might keep #1 and sell the remainder (not quite the attachment as no search was involved - just got them in my weekly pull at the LCS!)

I've sold off things that I didn't have a sentimental attachment to owning. I sold off the scattered Star Wars comics I owned. I sold my "What if" collection. Many of the comics I own have a story or friendship attached to them. I remember where I was or what I was doing when I acquired them. Parting with some comics is like parting with the story about acquiring it. Although I'm forgetting more and more these days, I tend to remember a lot more moments in my life than people around me have remembered. I saw a "Monsters on the Prowl #18" online a day or two ago. I remember buying mine at a KOA campground in Florida while on vacation. I bought Nova #1 on vacation in Cleveland GA with my younger cousin. I didn't see that cousin again for 40 years because of a bitter divorce. His mom hid the kids from our side of the family and no one knew where they were. When I did see him a couple of years ago... the first thing I wanted to know is if he'd kept buying comics. He had continued to buy comics, but never collected them as much as me. It's not just objects that I'm selling when I sell comics.

Making this my last reply on CBCS. So losing the chance to know some of you (namely the ones I feel like I can still respect)will be my sense of loss. Because...

In 2011, I lost a friend who was the reason I was able to visit Japan for the very first time. She assumed the wrong thing, and acted like her reason for saying that was the truth. In 2012, I lost a girlfriend due to her claims that my Asperger's is an issue. I lost her as a friend because of what I said. I never had the chance to apologize for what I said. In 2015, I watched as my engagement ended in silence. None of my family even showed that it was a good thing to me, and why it happened made it worse. I am still trying to move on. In 2016, 2017, and 2018, I lost more and more of my confidence in myself.

Which is why I am reworking on everything in hopes of making a turnaround by 2019. And not a CBCS or CGC kind of turnaround. But even then it does not guarantee the chance to chat with you guys in person. Because unless there is a special meaning to something, comics and collectibles should not be something you see as a loss. The loss of those who were your friends, your family, and those who believe in you are. And when it comes to comic books, retain the memories you have and seek out the times you were happy collecting toys, comic books, and whatever else there is to own.

Because in the end, you have not truly lost those comics as long as you remember the time you had it. So here is to a happy 2019, and the hope your year is a graded 9.8 and not something that looks like a 9.6 in a 9.8 case.

I always figured I’d have a listless feeling of loss if I ever acquired an AF 15. Not because of the books that were sacrificed as part of the trade, but rather because I’d wonder “where do I go from here”?

To me, an AF 15 is the ultimate book I could hope to attain. Yes, there’s Action 1 and Detective 27, but I could only hope to get those if I stumbled upon them at a garage sale or something.

While there are certainly books I’d replace, there’s no grail I’d be chasing that would match what I already had. For that, I’d feel a sense loss.

So, I’d say what you’re feeling is fairly normal. You’ll get back the ones you really want, it’ll just take time. Keep us up to date as you check books off your list. That’s always fun to see. 👍🏼
