"The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books" is coming up on being 30 years old. Gerber Scarcity Index hasn't been updated for that long. CGC has their census and there are rumors of CBCS getting together their own, any thoughts of a compilation of the two in the hopes of a new "Scarcity Index". Gerber uses the following 30-year-old Scarcity Index. It's time for an updated one. Any thoughts or rumors??? 11 - non-existent - known to have been printed but no copies known - Gerber has not assigned any books an 11 10 - unique - less than 5 copies known 9 - very rare - 6-10 copies 8 - rare - 11-20 copies 7 - scarce - 21-50 copies 6 - uncommon 50-200 copies 5 - less common than average 200-1000 copies 4 - average - 1000-2000 copies 3 - more common than average 2 - common 1 - very common |

@OGJackster I like where your heads at, would be kind of cool if somebody did this again. It would be a bear of a task though, basically grab the OPG and go through it line by line. It would take years without help Do it! You can then call it the jackster index ![]() |

@OGJackster - I wonder if an updated version will ever happen. If I want to know how rare something is, I look at the CGC Census and eBay. If there are less than 10 graded copies and I can't find a decent (or any copy) on eBay's current or completed listings, I'd say it is pretty rare. I am still amazed when I look at the Census and see no listings for some books. Remember too, it can be rare, but if no one cares about owning it, it will be hard to sell or even put a price on it. There are very few SA DC's in high grades on the CGC Census (compare to SA Marvel titles and the difference is amazing), but the lack of demand for them has kept their prices well below Marvels from that time period. | ||

@esaravo Agreed. I just question the almost 30-year-old scarcity index when it's used by sellers to increase the interest in a book when selling it. I guess there's nothing wrong with doing that, I just wonder about the accuracy. If they advertise a book as being scarce and it's based on information from 30 years ago, it very well could be inaccurate and false. Should it be considered just a selling gimmick in today's market? Kudos to Ernest and Mary Gerber for taking on the enormous task of compiling the information that was used in the Photo Journal Guide to Comic Books. I look forward to the day that a revised edition is published that utilizes today's technology. Maybe a wiki-Gerber-verse website? |
