How accurate is this show when they evaluate comics? |

Nice! I live about 25 minutes from that place. I cringe whenever I see someone handling a book like that. Even if they know what they are doing LOL!

Assuming the Hulk 1 is as nice as it appears and not trimmed or restored, the signature kills it. Ugh. ![]() |

When the head grader from CGC walks in and says it’s about a fine and doesn’t mention restoration. I don’t think you could get a more professional evaluation.

For a collector, that $40k price seems like a no-brainer for the whole lot due to the potential value of the #1 alone in the next year. Since they are a retailer and looking to make money, I cannot blame the store for offering half of the asking price. There are too many deep pockets out there who knows what he brought in and would be more than willing to pay his price, I wouldn't be surprised if he was using the show as advertising.

I don't think the value of 2 through 6 should have been disregarded. All have strong demand.

Bringing silver age keys into a pawn shop??! Really? Obviously this person did some research to know the value. But of all places you can maximize your profit on such sought after comics...a pawn shop? Something ain’t right. |

This is a TV show with staged guests, the negotiations are likely real. These are not random people walking into the store with a live camera. He clearly had a scripted answers that the Hulk was changed from Gray to Green.

@Homer I heard it's all fake. The small stuff in the background that's going on is the real pawn-shop.

I actually wrote a paper on Pawn Stars for a final in one of my communication courses. The store in Vegas is essentially a tourist trap filled with branded merchandising from the show and some cooler items from the show on the wall. The staff seen on the show don't work the counter (Due to how long they'd waste their day talking to customers about the show instead of running a business)...they also all make a whack of cash doing personal appearances at various events in Las Vegas. If someone has an item to be sold for the show, it's vetted by producers and has to be brought in on a day when they're shooting the season...which is why it sounds like they're reading off a script when they appear to be knowledgeable about an item, because producers have already researched the item and done a write-up... when they say "Let me call someone who knows more about this", they're already on site in the store to keep shooting delays to a minimum. Items being brought in and sold are legitimate, the negotiating is legitimate, but everything else in the show is completely fabricated for TV... |

Quote:Originally Posted by Paulbg2000 I believe you are correct except for the last part. Some, if not many, of the items featured on the show are "planted." I know several collectors who have rare and/or unusual items who have been "invited" to appear on the show as a prospective seller. There was no intent to sell or pawn and a deal was not going to happen... but it was a chance to get on tv. |

95% of tv shows, reality or scripted, are fake. Even all the Real Housewives shows that my wife watches... even Gold Rush on History channel that I watch! "Tony Bleeps" lol
