Trimmed or Untrimmed? OPINIONS NEEDED!7842

Collector comic_book_man private msg quote post Address this user
Dumb question but is this interior trimmed or is it apart of the same off-cut that is seen in all these high grade blue label X-Men #1s? (front right edge, interior pages exposed & longer at the bottom)

Example:

The staples are slightly staggered, which might explain it too...

but what about this X-Men #1 interior:

Trimmed?
Production Cut?

I'm thinking that the interior of the bottom photos is of a trimmed X-Men #1, and the blue label edge being skewed in the graded photos is actually due to staple placement which appears to be slightly off on every X-Men #1 that I've seen (top staple shifted toward the back side of the book which pulls the front when folded.

Thoughts?

Personally I think it’s for sure a production cut, your good

@Aliens Thank you for your input!

Have you handled a lot of these books or seen this before personally where it looked like that and graded as blue label?

Here's another example...
-2 left edge highlights (foxing top of book but not left edge?)
-1 top interior highlight (huge gap between panel and edge?)
-2 interior edge highlights (top right, bottom right corners - paper overhang from trim or illusion?)

Why would anyone trim a book? the fact that I even need to ask these questions drives me nuts...

A better picture would be a close-up of the book closed where the cut would be.

I have seen stuff like this before where the page le that’s are out of proportion, Marvel was printing thousands of copies at a time so it was bound for some cutting errors to invividual pages or books to happen

@X51
I will attach some new photos shortly.

So far it seems like the consensus is "not trimmed" ?

I have one or two more pictures to get from the left side of the book, but otherwise...

I guess now that I look at it this way, the panels are just so skewed it tricks my mind into thinking its cut?

off-center production print(with added ink blurring), optical illusion...not trimmed?
Anyone think otherwise?

@X51 @Aliens

Any change in opinion based on those?

I really wanted to look at it closed from the edges in the right hand bottom corner and from the bottom of the book. If it's sheared by hand you'll usually get a clean cut with the cover cut aligning exactly with the cut of subsequent pages. Most comics are not that way. For whatever reason, the cover cut & the insides are usually offset a little.

@X51 Do you mean this area but from a side angle?

Side angle. I want to see how the pages align as they sit on one another. The picture above doesn't tell me anything because the cut could be slanted. A clean crisp cut would be suspicious.

If the cover cut is flush with the interior pages... suspicious.

-

If they are uneven... less likely of trimming.

@comic_book_man - To my eyes, that’s how it should look. Notice that some pages are just slightly longer than other pages. If it was trimmed, they all would be exactly the same length.

PS - If you don’t want to take a chance on that book, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands!

Last photo angle, any change in opinion or still think untrimmed?
Pages stick out a hair from the bottom of the cover, but the top of the cover overhangs a bit

FINAL VERDICT?

TRIMMED :
UNTRIMMED : 1 (X51)

It looks good to me. It would take a lot of effort to micro-trim just the cover. I think it's unlikely that it's trimmed from the pictures.

Have it professionally pressed. Like Hero Restoration. He also checks against trims and color touches (restoration). Then you should be able to tell.

If you are tracking a professional scammer, anything is possible. They pay more attention to detail.
Trimming was more common in the 70's to give books a better eye appeal. It wasn't as malicious as it is today, but it was still shady. The trimming done by amateurs is going to be the majority of what the average collector must face. Fraud is wrong, but I don't freak out as much restoration as much as others do. I'm collecting the comics, not examples of perfect printing. If the book is the real book and it takes a forensics analysis to determine it was tweaked, I'm not going to panic about it. It's still better than little Billy writing his name on the cover and folding it up to put it in his back pocket.

I started collecting SA Marvels and DC’s in the mid-1970’s. So far two books that I have submitted to CBCS have come back trimmed and anothet had small color touch on its cover (all Marvels). My teenaged self never had a clue that some dealers were doctoring up their books.

@comic_book_man To me it looks a little strange... Can't say for certain, but it just looks like the covers don't add up to the correct position, and the interior pages you shown us, looks misaligned. Is that due to poor printing or trimming is the question.
