Whats the CBCS policy on on book with mature content? Example the new Batman Damned book, I know it cant be graded because of the size, but if they could would they? Would they mention the controversy on the label?

My understanding is that anything like the Bat-dong is up to their discretion.

The "official" stance is this:

It's my understanding that artistic nudity (such as the case with Batman Damned) is fine, but pornographic or bestiality images are not. For instance, I believe that the explicit cover of Savage Dragon #225 went too far, while many of the risque covers from Zombie Tramp or Dejah Thoris are fine.

I'm curious as to the reason why. I totally understand why hate, racist, illegal pronographic material would be refused but why legal nude material? Is it the idea that if the book is graded then the subject matter itself can be considered condoned or endorsed by the grading company?

@GAC You must have misunderstood what I posted. Nudity, like in the risque Zombie Tramp comics, is fine. Go to eBay and you can find CBCS slabs of those comics. However, the uncensored cover of Savage Dragon #225 was deemed too explicit and, last I heard, CBCS will not grade them. The line is their call. The only example that I know of that they will not slab due to cover art is the Savage Dragon #225 uncensored cover. If you've seen it, you would probably admit that it is pornographic in nature.

@Jesse_O My apologies, I should have worded my question better. I get that CBCS will grade risque books but why not books like Savage Dragon 225? I have seen it and it most definitly is pornographic but it's also a legally distributed book by a major publisher. I'm not trying to suggest CBCS should grade the book just trying to figure out why they won't. Do they feel having a CBCS label on a book like that tarnishes their brand in some way? Do they not want to possibly offend the grader by having to look at the book? I'm just curious to the reason why they wouldn't grade an otherwise legal but possibly offensive book.

Is it an HR thing, a company image thing?

@GAC ah!! Got ya!! I don't know all the reasons, but I do know that part of it has to deal with the graders and workplace environment. There was some mention of crossing the religious or personal beliefs of the graders. There was also mention of creating a comfortable workplace setting. I do not recall all of the specifics. I'm going off my memories of previous conversations on this topic and what was said by CBCS employees. Also, I believe that CGC follows similar guidelines. I know they do not slab the SD #225 uncensored cover. Plus, it could have something to do with the company image, I am not certain.

It's more of a company image thing. Just because a major publisher prints it doesn't mean we have to slab it. It's at our discretion and on a case by case basis when it hits our office.

Definite rejects are graphic sexual acts (coitus with penetration) and bestiality or underage sex acts (either shown or implied). Books can be rejected for other reasons, but these examples are pretty much a 100% chance.

I just saw that cover, and wow! Why would they print that!? That is 100% porn!
