Got out for a few hours Sunday evening. Caught 3 keeper largemouths, one short, and a pickerel. This guy grabbed a Texas-rigged Yum Dinger in some lily pads before it got dark. The rest of the fish were caught on a spinnerbait.

Nice! By pickerel do you mean a walleye or a pike? It seams some people call both of them that.

@HeinzDad - I mean a chain pickerel, a much smaller, but very aggressive relative of a northern pike. Northern pike are stocked in only a few ponds in RI (they don't reproduce in our warmer ponds and lakes) and walleyes are only found in one or two ponds in the whole state (and one of those - Beach pond, borders CT). I have caught a few pike in RI, but I have never caught a walleye.

That solves it, you didn't mean either. I'll have to look up the chain pickerel as I'm unfamiliar. My grandma referred to both northerns and walleye as pickerel. I haven't been right since I was 7.

I caught a pickerel one time. Thought I had a monster on the line by the way it fought. Pound for pound, it was one of the toughest fish I ever fought to land.

Growing up, we had a lake cabin that eventually became our lake home. I was motoring a boat long before I drove a car. But in the spring, the northern pike (we just called them northerns) came into our shallow bay and I caught many just casting a daredevil off our dock. I loved to fight them!!!

I was driving an old farm tractor long before I drove a car.

A boat sounds a lot more fun. LOL

Caught the biggest golden shiner I've ever seen in my life today. Thought it was a small bass the way it hit my streamer.

I'm sucking this year on saltwater. Trying to focus primarily on fly rods this year while in obx. Haven't caught sh*t besides stupid lizard fish and left phone in truck while caught. Have a taco and fly rod pic instead.

Fishing has been as cold as the weather. I managed to catch one small largemouth bass on a jig yesterday.

Similar results from the previous weekend.

Waiting for ice fishing season...

Here’s how to check for ice thickness AND see if it’s a good spot to fish.

Never been ice fishing, but went fishing plenty of times it was so cold you had to dip your rod/reel into the water to break the ice free, then cast again immediately.

Plus it helps to have a thermos full of hot coffee loaded with sugar to keep from going into hypothermia.

It started to snow pretty hard. I had 5 flags and caught 4 pickerel. After about 3 inches of snow, I called it a day.

Got out on the ice again yesterday, this time with my fishing buddy Al. We have been fishing together since high school (about 44 years). Walked what seemed like miles - to the pond, all over the pond, and then back to the truck. Neither of us caught a bass, but a few pickerel were kind enough to bite. The best part was just being outdoors, enjoying the day, and doing something normal (for me anyway). The hot dogs and burgers were great too.
