Questions about the cleaning and pressing process7387

Collector Darkseid_of_town private msg quote post Address this user
I am in the preliminary stages of considering what and how to handle many of my more valuable books. I have mostly purchased raw books, or bought slabs rather than submitting. Last year I experimented with a few books to CGC for grading cleaning and pressing.
I currently have a book in the que for CBCS to press clean and grade, an older Fantastic Four that might score a 3.5-40
While I have a fairly good idea of what is involved in pressing a book ,I am trying to understand what effect cleaning has. Apparently it does nothing to remove browning nor tanning, and does not whiten the pages, will not remove ink, nor marker,so umm what exactly is it cleaning then?

Any thoughts or inut would be useful in my determinations, thanks

It cleans surface dirt and some removable ink transfer especially on books with white covers.

Here is an example of what cleaning accomplishes. The before picture isn’t the best and I color touched it slightly so the two had a more similar color temperature but you should be able to see a difference

Wow, that looks nice.
Do you have before and after pictures of the front cover you'd be willing to share?

Grading notes before:
light soiling, bends creases, finger smudges & small stains front & back cover some breaks color
few small tears on spine
several staples added then removed with tiny holes through book
few small edge stains on 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th page.
spine wear & stress some breaks color'

Grading notes after:
2 staples added, then removed
few stains on cover & pages
spine tears, wear, stress & creases breaks color
general wear & creasing to cover breaks color

Looks like the cleaning couldn't get everything but the tears and staples aren't fixable anyway.

@kaptainmyke @xkonk Correct the cleaning and pressing certainly make the book more presentable but the book had issues beyond the cover that affected the grade and could not be addressed with a simple pressing

Forget pressing, I need to know the secret to turning OW-W pages into White pages.

Agreed! I wish we were allowed to say how to clean comics here.
