I am in the preliminary stages of considering what and how to handle many of my more valuable books. I have mostly purchased raw books, or bought slabs rather than submitting. Last year I experimented with a few books to CGC for grading cleaning and pressing. I currently have a book in the que for CBCS to press clean and grade, an older Fantastic Four that might score a 3.5-40 While I have a fairly good idea of what is involved in pressing a book ,I am trying to understand what effect cleaning has. Apparently it does nothing to remove browning nor tanning, and does not whiten the pages, will not remove ink, nor marker,so umm what exactly is it cleaning then? Any thoughts or inut would be useful in my determinations, thanks |

It cleans surface dirt and some removable ink transfer especially on books with white covers.

Here is an example of what cleaning accomplishes. The before picture isn’t the best and I color touched it slightly so the two had a more similar color temperature but you should be able to see a difference Before ![]() After ![]() |

@kaptainmyke @xkonk Correct the cleaning and pressing certainly make the book more presentable but the book had issues beyond the cover that affected the grade and could not be addressed with a simple pressing
