CBCS Graded

Got My First Submission Back Today7273

You do know that the new guy brings the donuts, right? DWeeB1967 private msg quote post Address this user
Well, I submitted my first group of books to CBCS for grading back in late May at Comicpalooza in Houston and I just got them back today. These are comics that I bought probably 30 years ago and have had since then. Two of them I had previously graded across the street (years ago) but the others were raw.

All in all, I was happy with the grades. Most were very close to my own personal grades - maybe higher or lower by 1/2 grade. However, I had a very happy surprise with one of the previously graded comics.

The ASM #136 had been previously graded by CGC but the grade just seemed low to me. So, I cracked it out and submitted it for grading at CBCS. Wouldn't you know it, it came back with exactly the same grade. So, I wasted some money on that one, but at least now I know.

The GSX #1 was the one that surprised me. Years ago, I had it graded by CGC and they had assigned it a 9.2. They had also included comments about "Dave Cockrum" being written on an interior page (as is their way of handling non-witnessed signatures). When I submitted this one to CBCS, I did it primarily for the signature verification. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised to see the grade once it came back. All I can figure is that CGC counted the presence of the signature against the grade. Dunno... but I'm not complaining.

"AMAZING" Books!

I gotta start getting serious about picking up a Dr.Strange Book myself

Congratulations on your 1st submission! I wouldn't say you wasted your money on the AMS #136, It looks sooooo much better in that CBCS slab

Regards
John

That is quite the grade discrepancy. What were the CGC grader’s notes?

You know, @CaptainCanuck, I never looked at the CGC grader's notes since I didn't feel like paying the money to do so. I mean... I was happy enough with the 9.2, so it wasn't a big deal. Now, I kind of wish I had and I may.

For sure. I know paying for grader’s notes is annoying, but in this case it would be interesting to see what they said.

Unless it was a green label book, the grade discrepancy would be due to the signature counting against grade on one

I just sent in 20 ASM's from the late 80's thinking they were all 9.6's and I think 3 made the cut. You grabbed 9.2's and a 9.6 from the 70's...very nice. You must be hanging out with @Shrewbeer and @Esaravo

@DWeeB1967 Congrats in getting your books! They look great! I also submitted at Comicpalooza, and by books still show submitted/received. Slightly perturbed. Going to call in until I get a human being on the phone & figure out where my books are.

Thanks, @Watcher. Getting these higher grades was probably made easier because I bought all these books back in the late 1980s or early 1990s. So, not too long (relatively speaking) after they were released. Then, I just stuck them in mylars and boxed them. They've been in my closet ever since.

grading is subjectable, that why grading is a crock of S***. if you were to break that GSX out and send it back, it may not come back with the same 9.6 that why some people buy low grade books 9.2 9.4 and break them out and send them back in and get a higher grading. but this is what it is now,

#1 I agree that people do crack and re-submit books.

#2 I disagree that 9.2 & 9.4 are low grade books.

#3 You failed to mention that those "Low Grade" 9.2 9.4 Books run just as good of chance as coming back with lower, not higher grades.

Its a slippery slope, but its the only game in town.

I guess it comes down to who do you trust more about the grade of a comic; the local comic shop dealer, ebay-craigslist seller, etc or an official 3rd party grader like CBCS or CGC? I think the verdict has already been rendered.

When your GSX1 was CGC slabbed was it a green label or blue label?

@GAC Blue slab. It simply had a comment staying that the words "Dave Cockrum" on the first page.
