Attended the Muskoka con here in Canada last weekend and took a chance to play around with Acrylic Paint Pens for signings.

Haven't noticed a lot of people using them.

Are these really not a thing?

@DJC_II what brand did you use?

@ONLINE_209 I agree I dont think the aesthetic of them suits all books. I didnt get them done on some older books, dark Phoenix saga or days of future past. Kind of wouldn't mind trying them out though?

@Hcanes picked up Molotow? The art store here recommended these as their best. Bought 4 to start but the purple I am least impressed with

Doesn't sharpie have some that are similar? I thought I saw a person have some of them at a con and thought they were sharpie brand.

I always use the metallic sharpies, heard too many horror stories of paint pen signatures sticking to the inner well in a slabbed comic.

Unless acrylic paint is different?

@SpiderTim I did look for a sharpie brand but didn't find any. They may exist and I will definitely take a better look the next time I'm there. These were just what they recommended, so I took a bit of a leap of faith. I tested a few out at the store before purchasing and these looked to be the thickest in terms of their application

@shrewbeer We are going to find out lol because I also got a Gambit Gold foil 1 signed by Claremont with a red paint pen.
The store guys did advise me there is an oil paint pen and acrylic. I've painted before, so I opted for the acrylic pens because I know they dry fast. The books I got done seem to be doing okay, but these 2 aren't cased. I probably won't get my Gambit until, close to, the end of the year

Paint pens have issues. They look great but can stick to the Mylars/inner wells, and can sometimes be temperamental when pressing. I love the way they look, but just know you can experience issues.

Thanks for that fast response Steve! lol

Does this apply to any type of pen? Be it oil or acrylic paint pen? They do look nice and would love to use them but if they were to stick to the inner well that would definitely be a problem. I am also concerned that regular sharpie ink fades out over time and am looking for a longer lasting option for the signatures.

What would you recommend?

lol i agree, i would also like to know.

The original reason I got these pens was to get a detective 880 signed in green, slab it, and be on my way, but there's no way i'll try that out if there's any risk.

I just had flashbacks to the time one of the kids crayons made it into the dryer.

I've heard people say to only use the water based ones, but I can't confirm. I've had some books signed a few years ago with oil based paint pens as a test, and have not had an issue with them...yet.

The ones I've seen the most issues with are the ones McFarlane uses, but I have no idea what they are for sure. The white, yellow, light blue, and green pens he uses tend to leave residue on the bags/inner wells.

So I can't say for sure what is and isn't safe to use, just be aware that there can be problems with paint pens.

I have a friend that collects autographs. He has tons of them on all kinds of items and I called him to ask about this. He said, "you should be very careful with paint based pens. They are very hit or miss." He explained that problems might not appear right away. He told me it's better to stick with the basics and get an autograph that will last and not cause problems than to get something that looks great at first but turns into a mess that ruins the signed item."

Would you mind asking him what is the best product to use to get autographs? And what his experience is with sharpies fading over time?

Help would be highly appreciated! Tx in advance

he said that he sticks with blue or black sharpies for the majority of his signatures and that all inks will fade over time.

I use ball point on the 1st page under the comic book indicia. No rubbing off; no decay; no sticking; no fading; no bleeding; no defacing.
Sort of amazing what the classic method will do

Use sharpie metallics. Screw paint pens. They damage books, slabs, and inner wells.

Would a pen with India Ink be more appropriate to get signatures? That is what people use to ink Original Art, isn't it?

I started using paint pens around 2013-14. Never had a bad experience BUT I have ALWAYS taken extra precautions to make sure the ink is dry before placing the book in a bag. I had to do a lot of testing on reader copies before I found ones that worked for my standards. Montana is the brand I have used most. Never tried Molotow. Brands employed or endorsed by taggers and graffiti artists are a good sign.

I feel ya man, I was hella wary about using paint pens myself. But the fact is that metallic sharpies can ruin books too and they do use paint. I have a sad, sad story to go with that but "collector beware" is more fun and ominous.

It would be so easy to take a strip of clear tape from a tape gun and put over the ink pen signature to protect the ink. Just sayin'.

Hm, not sure I'm following.

On the book themselves? Where does this tape get applied?

Time will tell with these types of paint pens. You only know something is wrong if you crack it out of the slab or attempt to take it out of the bag.

Personally I hope they are a viable alternative as I like the way the signatures pop out at you.

Same. I mean, I'm willing to take the plunge. I honestly did as much research as I could, Went with the strongest brand and highest recommendations. I mean only time will tell but I did just check on my first signed books just now (the uncanny books posted above), and so far, still perfect.
