@TheKaptain This is from The_watcher on another thread
"Originally CBCS used a star to designate a book that looked better than its assigned grade, as has been mentioned. There was a dispute with NGC over the use of the "*", so CBCS began using a check mark to indicate the same thing. Hope this clears things up"

As discussed and answered in another thread, it denotes that it looks better than the assigned grade because of a flaw that is not perceptible without opening the slab. ie grades as 9.4 but looks like 9.6 or higher.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

I'm not the person that had this encapsulated, but it is the first CBCS book owned by me.
Can't afford a Hulk #1, so I bought this Hulk #2..

I would be curious to see the notes also. PQ on the inside lower half of the book looks pretty creamy to tan. That might have been part of it plus on the back upper right it looks like some moisture spots. Plus im not sure how all the resto plays into the grading if at all.

Otherwise it looks like a great book.

My first CBCS slab was actually three: I submitted them at the same time so all three are my first.

I decided to try them out by buying a cheap Batman book on eBay.

My first submission to CBCS was at the 2015 Baltimore Comic Con.

The highlight was a Preacher 1, which I had Ennis sign at the show for a Gold label, got a 9.6 on it....I was pretty sure it'd get a 9.8.

I thought it was undergraded, personally I but still got $550+ for it via ebay auction. At the time, that well above what both CBCS/CGC 9.6 gold Ennis labels were selling for.

I had my helper man my booth while I waited in line to get Ennis's sigs on the 1 and the 2 I brought with me.My helper called me on my cell and told me I had a guy at my booth asking for a deal on a wall book so I had to go back to my booth.

West Stephan volunteered to keep my place in line and handle the sigs without me, which was verymuch appreciated.

On that note, I talked to West about the market, cons and slabed books...he came across as a very knowledgable guy.Very friendly, as well.

I had the a similair experience with Steve Paulus when I had the booth next to CBCS at the East Coast Comic Con in 2015.

Hats off to both of those cats.

I also enjoyed meeting Borock at the NJ Comic Expo last year.Though I doubt the experience was shared on his end, as I wasn't exactly much for engaging conversation, at that show....haha.

I was working on about an hour of sleep from the night before, which was a a poorly made decision to spend all night pressing books for Ennis to sign at the show, and process new books for show stock............good times

@jeffersondb84, what do the grader notes say? I have to agree that from these pics a 7.0 appears low, although as mentioned there does appear to be some staining of some sort on the back cover.

Not rare by any means, but it's an issue that is normally mis-cut or mis-wrapped. I've passed on at least a dozen different copies over the years, so I was pretty happy to stumble upon this. My first CBCS-certified book. A totally legit NM-.

This is the first CBCS book that I bought. Mexican variant of a classic pre-Code Harvey horror comic!

Secret Wars #10 in a 9.8. My favorite Dr Doom cover ever. I've since sold the book, but have a few more both raw and slabbed. No pic, sadly.

My first CBCS graded books.Sub them in at Emerald city con
sub-mariner 16 3.0 offwhite/white. nicest looking 3.0
And JLA 1. graded slight 2.0 offwhite
both books look good in their cases. And grades and detected color touch on JLA are all spot on.

That Sub-Mariner #16 looks great! More like a 6.0+ than a 3.0. Were you satisfied with the grader's notes for it?
