THe New Mutants #100 Production issue?6998

Collector KYoung_1974 private msg quote post Address this user
So I've been going through mine and my wife's comic collections, valuing and pulling out dupes and runs that we don't want in order to make room and I ran across something weird. Between us we have three copies of The New Mutants 100 (2 first run editions and a 2nd printing). When I pulled the first runs out and put them side by side, One has a blue background and one has a purple-ish background. I'm pretty sure that the purple-ish one was hers, so I wondered about storage and fading, but the rest of the colors look OK (I think). Does anybody know if there were any issues with productions? Here are a couple of scans so you can see what I mean.

Does not look faded, just different color strike.

It's common for these colors.

It's caused by the drifting ink densities through a production run. Most easily seen in the colors made up of the magenta or cyan inks. Colors made up of both magenta and cyan (such as the examples here) are even more easily affected. Perfectly normal to see on comics pre-2000ish when quality standards were loosed and when conics were printed on more antiquated equipment.

More notable examples are the background on books like Hulk 181, ASM 300, and New Mutants 87 drifts between a lighter orange to a darker red.

Post these two pics on facebook and state "Extremely Rare Variant" and ask $300 for it. Someone will ask you if you take trades.

(P.S., just kidding) (Not Kidding)

@SteveRicketts thanks for the info

@conditionfreak believe me the first thing I thought of was listing it on eBay as a rare supersecret variant. I won't, but I thought about it.

Thanks for that elaborate answer Steve! Now the next question is: Does a difference in color affect grade?

So if that is how the colors for those two books are caused, would anyone be able to speculate is this oerhaps what happened with the Kirby Sandman #1 from the 70's series? It is known for both a blue and a similar purplish cover as well...thoughts?
