With the passing of Steve Ditko, an idea bubbled from the depths of my mind to the forefront again. When Defiant Comics was launching way back in 1993, they first released trading card sets as well as binders that held the standard nine cards per page. Once you had a set and put them in the binder, it formed a comic. Being a trading card set, there was the base set and then there were chase cards of varying rarity. I have a near complete set, missing a couple of the chase cards, although I can't recall what cards I have or still need. I do know that in the 25 years since the cards were released I have never seen or even heard of anyone with the "Level Three" Steve Ditko original art cards. A few years ago, I undertook an extensive search through both comic and card dealers and no one knew of the sketch cards. Can anyone confirm or deny the existence of these cards, or am I just chasing my tail? The sketch cards were advertised on the back of the card wrappers. ![]() |

Dang, that's impressive! ![]() I don't feel like it's worth that, but it's theirs, they can ask whatever they want. I'm tempted to start picking up every box/case of cards that I can find now that I know they might be out there! While looking today, I did find an entry in Janet Jackson's blogabout Steve Ditko's work at Defiant. There was a lot there that I had never even heard whispers about. If you're a Ditko fan, this is a great read. It also gives us a fair amount of info about Jim Shooter. I loved what he did at Valiant and had hoped Defiant would wind up stronger as a result of the problems that he experienced at Valiant. As much as I wanted to like the Defiant stuff, it simply wasn't Valiant. |

Quote:Originally Posted by MedicAR I've conversed with Janet online about working with Ditko. It helped shape my mental impression of who he was. I own a Shadowman page that Ditko drew. ![]() Defiant really fell apart after in the beginning. I think it had to do with the Marvel lawsuit and squabbles with the River Group. Towards the end, it was really getting better. I agree though about it not living up to what Shooter had done at Valiant. I think Broadway was better than either Valiant or Defiant, but it didn't last long. This is not mine, but it was being sold at one point.. ![]() |

Ugh, I missed out on the last item you displayed, the three panel/card pieces that he did for Defiant. Several of these popped up on eBay a year or so ago and I missed out on every single one. No matter how much I bid, it went for just a little more. I'm not really sure why I'm attracted to his Defiant work. It's not his best stuff and a fair amount of his style was lost in the inking. I guess it's still the work of a master! I didn't recall him working on Shadowman, I knew there was some of his stuff in X-O, though. |

I think he did one issue of Shadowman. He drew some Solar issues also. He did some of the Wrestling comics. There a lot of Defiant info here. http://defiant.x10.bz/ |
