| I'm surprised only one person has mentioned Russ Heath. In my opinion, he is probably the most under appreciated artist out there. The guy has a tremendous portfolio!!! He co-created "the Haunted Tank" and "Sea Devils". He drew war comics for DC. He drew a story in EC's Frontline Combat #1. If you've ever seen the Roman soldiers or Revolutionary soldier full page ads in comics from the '70's, that was drawn by Heath!!! I'd definitely place him in the OG category since he started with Timely in 1947. | ||

Quote:Originally Posted by Aliens Great post. However, I would argue that the predecessors to the top ones, who laid some of the very first groundwork for them, should be high up that list. EC Segar (Popeye), Chester Gould (Dick Tracy), Paul Terry (Mighty Mouse, which Stan Lee wrote stories for in his very early career as a teen for Timely), and even Walt Disney. Walt created Mickey and Donald for animation, but the latter especially spawned massively popular comic books published by the then-powerhouse Dell, with Carl Barks at that helm. Do Seigel and Shuster put together superman without having read Popeye? Does Stan Lee go on to create a plethora of awesome superheroes without first writing Mighty Mouse stories? Do Bob Kane and Bill Finger put together Batman and Joker without reading Chester Gould's adventures with Dick Tracy and his various villans? |

@GAC I agree Kirby did the most In the most ways, he did so much for the industry that I would need more than an entire thread to say it all He is the king and always will be. One of the most brilliant artists, minds and creators that has ever touched his planet. Never met him but I've heard good stories about him in real life. Did anyone here meet Kirby? What was he like? |

also yes Kirby is probably the most important individual in marvels history, and of course he does not get that credit. Stan does. I know a lot of people have things against stan, he's a "credit thief" he "did nothing" but give him credit. He is the true person who made marvel a billion dollar industry. He is the chairman and the face of marvel. And it has always been that way. I believe stan gets the credit he gets because he has lived so long. Unlike ditko, Steve ditko was brilliant and deserved more credit but he was a very private man. He did not care for fame or money, marvel was just a job to him, that is why he was not as recongnized I believe. May ditko Rest In Peace as well as we have lost a legend, but stan gets all the publicity because he can, he was there when marvel became bigger than it ever was, he I don't believe was ever a credit thief he was known for giving everyone credit in the comics he literally gave the letterer credit which I don't think a nypneever did, stan was always a very public figure everyone knows who stan is I can't say the same for jack or Steve, stan is in all the he marvel movies which made him even more likable. Stan has always been like that. A very public and fun guy. Was Kirby like this. Not as much but he was no ditko. Kirby went to lots of cons and was interactive with fans as I have heard. He was gone to soon. I believe I'd Kirby was still here he would get just as much credit as stan now a days. If it was Kirby getting the cameos I would be certain everyone would know the name jack kirby. Marvels prime is today. Wig all the movies it is bigger than it has ever been and stan is right in the middle of it. I know this is off topic from this form by j got so caught up into it . Stan deserved the credit he gets as he did do a lot, does Kirby deserve more credit... well some would say so. It is no question jack kirby did more than most, but once again e lost him too soon. At the end of jacks life he began to change up his story saying stan stole all the credit and did nothing, by back then they were friends and jack was fine with stan, and now a days we only have stan to take his word for it. Jack cannot say what is true and not true anymore. But to conclude yes I do believe kirby deserves more credit than he gets as well as ditko but stan chose to be a public figure and that is why he gets what he gets I respect that. I love stan, jack and Steve they all did a lot. |
