Hardest comic to find in high grade?6733

Collector michaelekrupp private msg quote post Address this user
This is really more of a question for golden age and high grade collectors: what are, in your experience, the hardest comics to find in true NM condition? I personally have two that I have been looking for for years with no luck. The last time I checked the cgc census neither had any copies graded above 9.0. Both were punished by Harvey Comics in the mid to late 1950a.
The first comic is Hot Stuff 1. I did eventually settle for a nice 6.5 copy which I had to pay double guide price to get(the guide is way underpriced on key Harveys IMO). It does have off white to white pages, which is a rarity in higher grade Harveys. Virtually all of the so called “file copies” are cream to off white at best due to being stored in a warehouse that was not temperature controlled. My understanding is that the situation was so bad that there were entire boxes that were completely toasted, and I am guessing that the copies of Hot Stuff 1 were among those as no NM copies have been graded.
I believe the same must be true for my second impossible to find in grade comic, Spooky 1. This book is so rare in higher grades that I have searched for years and never even seen a Fine condition copy! My personal copy is in the g/vg range. If anyone out there knows someone who has a nice copy of Spooky 1, I am extremely interested.

What are your toughest books to find in grade? I really am interested to know.

I have always found the early silver streak issues to be rather hard to find in higher grade... or in any grade at all! 😂 I settles for a silver streak 2 which was coverless and the first wrap was detached and split it's all there though... I think the claw is very underrated

One of personal Holy Grails was a high grade Batman 130. My grandfather bought me one when I was a kid, my first comic of my own- one of my best memories of him. I was finally able to get one in nice 9.0 after years of looking. There are only 38 on the CGC census. There is only one at 9.2, good luck finding that. The one I have is tied for second best with just two other ones at 9.0 Cost me $1000, I am happy.

Pretty much every series I collect is impossible to find in high grade much less any grade (minus the Church copies of course)

Although I believe Edgar never had a complete run of Super-Mystery Comics...only volumes 4-8.

First series Four Color books and first volume WDCS. Hardly any around at all, nevermind high grade.

You old collectors need to die off already so I can get some at a reasonable price 😁🍺

One I personally have sought out is Kid Colt Outlaw #1. But there are sooo many golden age books that are tough to find in high grade.

Try finding a Silver Streak #nn in high grade.

Almost all GA comics are impossible to find in true NM condition (I think @CatmanAmerica owns most of them, and @Earthshaker has the rest that aren't superhero - lol). Many SA comics from the early years (pre-1963/64), especially DC's and humor comics (like Harveys and Archies, for example) are difficult to find in higher grades. And most SA and some BA comics with black covers are tough finds. Try buying either an ASM #28 or a Spectre #1 in 9.8 for any amount of money, they don't exist.

I agree that there are many GA comics that you are lucky if you can find ANY copy of. Also, esaravo, a good point about certain comics being tougher in high grade because the color covers are predisposed to show even the slightest wear, such as the black ASM 28. Spooky 1 has a red cover, which would definitely show even the smallest spine stresses.

Seems like 50's DC and 50's Atlas books are very rare in high grade of even 8.0 or better. Not much for pedigree's during the 1950's. The paper was really cheap and thin during the 50's compared to the thicker books from early Goldenage. The Dell File, Harvey, and EC file copies kinda took out some of the 1950's quest for those publishers, but otherwise 50's books are very scarce in high grade.

Any high grade comic in my collection would be the hardest to find. I will put it in a specific location and know what box it in, but when I go back to look for it again it can't be found. The book will only be found again at a time when I'm not looking for it. It will reappear in the spot that I had originally placed it.

Its easy to come up with GA/SA and answers. How about BRonze, copper and moderns? Any comics out there that a 9.8 hasn't been seen or heard?

Batman 457 2nd print newsstand comes to mind.

Thanks! Alas, I'm just one of many. Other high grade Timely collectors include Richard Evans (MrBedrock) & sartyr (He prefers keeping his name private, so out of respect, I'll do that). Sadly, I don't believe either of them post on this board, but there are quite a few other high grade GA collectors around. My field of expertise & interest is more focused than broad. I primarily seek HG Timely, Quality, EC (GFC), Silver Streak and Cat-Man, with occasional acquisitions of HG books from other GA publishers, like MLJ.

My emphasis is primarily on exemplary cover art.

You would be hard pressed to find a full set of Albedo (including all printings) in high grade.

Issue two alone would cost you several thousand dollars.

Charlton “Underdog” #1 is not easy to find in high grade for a few reasons. For one, I’ve heard these were produced with Poor paper quality. No surprise, with Charlton’s Poor overall production standards.

Plus, the target audience was grade school kids. There’s Just less of a chance a little kid would have taken good care of it at the time.

You are dead on about Charlton Underdog 1, Slim! I have a complete set and the best issue 1 I could turn up is in the Fine range. Actually all of these issues are pretty hard to find at all, and especially in high grade. Early 70s Charltons are under rated IMO. I also have sets of Dudley Do Right and Bullwinkle and Rocky. The Underdog is the most significant, naturally, since the Charlton 1st issue is the first comic book appearance.
